I think it usually means they entertained a lower number until something soured the mash. The guy didn't return phone calls or wanted to change his price or something.

The HO got real attached to the number and wants to see if he can twist your finger into doing for that.

I see it as a chance to sell myself again and get a job. I don't have to do anything I don't want to do. Beauty of being the boss, ya know?

Wise words gus I think you are absolutely right. Huh. Funny how I explained everything to him, really sold myself and he was entertaining a guy who was going to reuse masonite lap siding and "fix" the entire area for $1500.00.. and was about that much under on the paintjob also.

Re: Customer Wants Major Detail Ignored.

Gus is right.

I don't care how long I've been sitting at home, when a customer tries the squeeze play I have to check my schedule to see if I can get to it when he needs it and recheck materials prices because it's been so long. If it backfires and he shops a lower price what have you lost other than an opportunity to be busy at a loss?

Good Luck
Dave

Okay sat on this for a week or so. I am giving him the estimate back and giving him a chance at 10% discount if he signs in 5 days. IF not then I throw this job in the trash. I have some work coming up, but have bills NOW. We will see.

I am actually debating on putting the trim all the way around the window. Here is the house front:

As of right now it is on the top and bottom, lap should not be caulked to the window it's self IMHO. Oh and I hate shutters

Re: Customer Wants Major Detail Ignored.

Man, if i needed work over the years and the customer wanted to cut a corner that would compromise the longevity of the project, i would put it in writing and go for, There is no way i am going to walk away on principal just to let another guy make the $ F--that. This does not apply to safety issues, but if you want me to build something that will fall apart in 4 years even after i warn you, i happily do it, then i will go back in 4 years and do it again. I dont understand that "i will only build it right attitude" we are here to make a living, not give work away. G

well the guy works for a law firm first of all, and there is water that IS running into his house right now. He has stalled up to this point trying to sue the developer.. which built this house 8+ yrs ago. SO.. yeah I don't want to be in any cross hairs in the future.

Is there a chance he knows all this and is setting you (and your insurance co.) up as the fall guy?

Re: Customer Wants Major Detail Ignored.

Interesting thread.

How can you do it right if the customer is dictating price and not letting you do it right?

The moment I saw 'lawyer' I wanted to tell you to run. Not that perhaps he isn't an honest guy, he may be, but from the info given it smells like he is looking for the blame to be shifted.

You can't lose money on the jobs you don't take. (Thanks to whoever has that in their sig)

Re: Customer Wants Major Detail Ignored.

honestly tucking it under wont be too much of a difference. I gave him a new proposal tonight, gave him 5 days to sign a contract and give me a check for half down. If he doesn't I won't honor any price already given. Put up or shut up. Oh and I told him in the proposal what I would do, gave detailed description in scope of work. We will see.
