Connection For 3(2x4) Built Up Post To 2(1 3/4 X 11 7/8) LVL
I have a scenario where a 3(2x4) built up post is supporting a beam constructed from 2(1 3/4 x 11 7/8) LVL. Also in another location I've got a 3(2x4) built up post supporting a beam comprised of 2(2x10). I can't seem to locate a post cap connector that will work for a 3(2x4) built up post and the plan reviewer is asking for connection details. Is there a standard connection method in this situation or is there a particular product that I'm overlooking? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If nothing else, would you be able to use two or four hurricane straps?

Re: Connection For 3(2x4) Built Up Post To 2(1 3/4 X 11 7/8) LVL
Your beams are (2) 1 3/4" LVLs so they are 3 1/2" wide and this matches your width of the (3) 2x4 posts you have, but your post is 4 1/2" deep and this is where you have the issue right?
Simpson Strong-Tie actually makes a CCQ or ECCQ (E is for End if you have an end condition) that will work for you. You just need to order the CCQ4X or ECCQ4X...it is not a direct catalog part from their "Wood Construction Connectors (C-2007)" catalog, but if you call into customer service at 800-999-5099 you can say you need the leg strap width you need, W2, needs to accomodate 4 1/2" depth...so they will make it either 1/16" or 1/8" over per your specifications. This is a screw column cap connection (using Simpson's SDS screws that come with the column cap), so it is much faster to install than the bolted column caps. A similar connection will work for your (2) 2x10 beam and (3) 2x4 post...just call for a CCQ3X or ECCQ3X (if you are at the end of the beam). The difference between this column cap and the CCQ4X is just the W1 width (so it will fit your different beams) I hope that helps... Last edited by TXconnectors; 08-24-2007 at 03:25 PM. That critera can befound in the manufacturers catalog. Look for bearing. The plan reviewer or code official will ask for it. The simpson catalog got something for everything.

Will the LPC4 connection work? Brain is kind of dead right now so I am not sure if it will work with what you are doing. Someone else do the thinking please
