Its for both. Participation is not only required, but we've been known to tar and feather lurkers.
We lose more good trim carpenters that way...
Yes, we call it sheetrock (trade name) drywall (another trade name) or gypsum board. Usually just 'rock' for short.

Any reason not to use plywood instead of all those blocks for this application??
Seems like 1 layer of 3/4" plywood, - - 1 layer of (spaced) backer blocks, - - then another layer of 3/4" plywood would make for a much quicker 'install', no??

That's a lot of freaking lumber up on that ceiling. I'm sure it will be awesome when it's done, but jeeze. That's a small forest up there.

It is a mess a wood. I'm with Tom on this one, plywood seems to have been the more efficient method. Maybe a reason we can't see.

Perhaps plywood is not a normal building material in the UK? I see that they still lath out their roofs instead of sheathing them.

how are all those small blocks of wood making up the circle nailed into the ceiling rafters? They look like they are just hanging on the drywall.

Perhaps that ceiling is covered in the same plywood that I speculated might not exist in the UK? Doesn't seem like drywall. You can see the long seams, and they aren't tapered or mudded.

Hi, Compie and all, I was going to use ply, but needed a total thickness of 4.25 inches including the drywall, also each circle is 32ft circumference or more making well over 132ft cutting with jigsaw.
so I came up with what you can see, the ceiling is 4x2 with drywall, this is under the original ceiling, I went on top and laid 14in wide strips of waste ply in between the joists, stuck down with buiding adheshive.
then my lad used a Paslode nail gun to fire ringshank nails through the drywall int the ply, you could hang your granny off them they were that good a fix, he did it real quick on his own. dont know if i did right, allways willing to learn.

My granny's been dead for a while now. I suspect that her coffin is filled with water. How many tons do you suppose that is?
