Can You Get It Up?

figured that'd get your attention. I've got a gable end wall to stand 22' high at peak. Too muck for wall jacks. Any suggestions? Also what do you think of installing windows before its stood?

Re: Can You Get It Up?

How wide is it? We did a wall about 19' tall at the peak (lots of windows, not set just headered 2x8's) of course the wall was 2x6 and was around 22' wide. 3 of us stood it using brute strength and some braces as we went up. I will tell you that it was not a lot of fun and I would prefer to never do that again... But you know how life is.

Don't sheath it and just stand it up. Or, set the gable end rafters and set the ridge and fill in the gable studs after.

One more reason to own a high lift. We don't set trusses the hard way anymore either.

My wall jacks are 23' tall and I don't know how long the wall is that you're doing , but I don't see why if you set a wall jack 1/3 of the way in from each end you'd have a problem.

Re: Can You Get It Up?

no, don't put windows in unless you're feeling lucky or can take out the sashes. too much chance for braking by someone with the butt end of a 2x. wait until you're done.

what kind of wall jacks you got? cable or 2x4 kind? cable ones should have no problem. I used 2x4 ones and you have to get a little creative. I might go as far as just nailing the plate down and nailing up one stud at a time. Have a guy stock and one on the staging.

Any way you look at it, gable walls take extra time.

My wall jacks have cable and are made by Proctor. Big, big life saver when you run a small crew or a one man show.

Joe Carola has the common sense answer. Why bother to rent a crane or wall jack for one wall? Stick frame it in place stud by stud.

Re: Can You Get It Up?

I always did the balloon walls in short tall sections and used bunches of 2x4 braces. Atleast 4 guys helps a lot. And I always do those walls before the other walls (so that you've got room to work) I only used a crane one time, ever, to lift a wall like that. But that wall was 28' (or so) tall and had windows and windows and windows. All the headers made it really heavy. Just my opinion.

I agree, but using wall jacks on a gable wall comes with a whole new set of rules.

Wouldn't window manuf. void their warranties from the possible stress on them because no wall lifts up perfectly flat.

Can you please explain to me, why in the world would you rent a crane to frame a gable wall?

Re: Can You Get It Up?

not to stray from subject...but on a 64"w window, 2 x framed wall, a 2 x 8 would be good enough for a header or jump to a 2 x 10??

if its a gable wall it bears nothing, 2x8 would be fine.

It all depends on the loads above. is it just a ranch? is there a room above? is there a similar window or opening above it which trasfers the loads around your header in question? or is there an offset window above it which concentrates a load over the center of your window? when in doubt use a Span Chart

2-2 x 8 header would be fine then. But why bother blocking above a 2x8 header when its faster to just use a 2 x 10 with a 2x4 cap that will fill in the space fully above your opening? (assuming your studs are 92 5/8 pre cuts)
