Beam Situation
Ok, I thouht I was helping my cause, but I guess I'm wrong. Here's my situation. I have a vaulted ceiling that runs 16 ft long. Rafter span is 11 ft ( half the roof/ from wall to ridge). Total span is 22 ft. Snow load is 70#. I have 4 beams at plate level in this 16 ft holding walls together. I thought that if I placed a double 2x12 SPF#2 beam under the 2x8 rafters ( 19.2) ctr at their halfway point ( 6ft) that I would be helping support them. Come to find out that this beam may actually be " pulling" on the rafters and "weighing" them down instead of supporting them because it's undersized. Take into account beam is properly supported at both ends with posts and footings. Engineer said I really don't need beam anyway.
Should i take it out? Replace it? Is it pulling and weuighing down rafters? |
