Wood Filler Recommendation On Crown Molding
A portion of the crown molding I am installing is on a curved wall approx. 10 feet long. The radius called for 39 3" sections with a 1.75 degree angle. All pieces are installed, but I need to "smooth" the section over. I dont need to conceal much as most of it went together fine. I normally use a Bondo type filler for repairs and blending trim, but this section is too long for sanding that hard of a filler. This is in the Northeast (Pittsburgh) on the 2nd flr ceiling of an open foyer. Any ideas of a filler to use? Would a picture help?

I would use bondo. I don't know of anything easier to sand that I would trust. Have fun!

The "Blue Label" Drywall Coumpound. Figure out the ratio yourself but I add 8 oz. of Joy dish detergent to 5 gal.mix it together very well, and I use it for all touchup - nail holes - point up etc. Cope a piece of that drywall sand block to your molding profile - sands like butter! Use a real good latex primer over the finished work - you'll never see a hairline in the joints.

HEY JR - YEA WORKS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL, NO SHRINKAGE. Every now and then we all have an issue - you can become an artist with it! The addition of the soap makes it very easy to sand, or just wipe down with a sponge - Good Luck!

Tricks....have to try that one out next time. I went with Bondo as usual, though it took a lot of sanding. I will post pics later on the end result

Re: Wood Filler Recommendation On Crown Molding
Drywall mud. Use a sandable "hot mud". Be sure not to use the old Durabond setting compound, it is like sanding plaster.
Just for information, the trick to using bondo is work it in small enough batches that you can sand it while it is still in the pliable stage. If you do not mix it too hot, you get enough time between when it is no longer sticky, but not yet rock hard. It sands easily in this stage. Last edited by troubleseeker; 01-20-2007 at 07:49 PM. |

Make sure that the wood trim is primed "sealed" before you lay anything else on it!

Re: Wood Filler Recommendation On Crown Molding
MH Ready Patch. It has to be applied without over-doing it though. Too much of this stuff and the whole day is spent sanding. If the gap is too big or the profile is off, the drywall spackle shrinks by the edge sticking out and has to be touched up a second time. Unless you hit it up thick and like sanding.
