What Is This Partial Miter Joint Called?

Can someone tell me what the proper name is for this partial miter joint?

it can be found at http: //s231. photobucket.com/albums/ee48/thexsleeper/?action=view&current=cutandmiterjoint.jpg (remove the spaces)

I have always called it a cut and miter joint, but I don't know if that's the appropriate term.

Did they use zig zags to hold it together?

Old houses have 4 1/2" casing with a 1/4" roundover on the interior edges, and backbanding around the outside perimeter... Since you can't do a butt joint with the 1/4" roundover, you make a miter cut on the first 1/4" of the roundover... then after that it becomes a butt joint. The picture is much clearer.

I've seen it called and call it myself, a "Mason's Miter". Maybe a local name adapted by region.

I've heard it called a European Mitre.

Funny how I have always used the "tre" spelling rather than the "ter" spelling.

Lots of old houses around here, 1800s. With a bead running on the inside of the casing. Often the bead is on both sides of the corner. We call the joint a "Jack Mitre" here also.

It's 'cause you're too close
to Canada.
