Re: What Do I Charge?

I may not be remembering somethin, but how ya know what truck I drive?
06 F-250 FX4 Crewcab 6.0L Diesel w/ 6 speed auto, I do wish it was a 350 cause of payload, but I can fix that. But nonetheless it is a dang nice truck, especially for a 23 yr old, and yes I have bought it on my own no help from any parents or whatever anyone might think.

I do understand the frustration, I guess I just can't believe the thread kept goin for so long.

Re: What Do I Charge?

The what to charge threads are a PITA and some times halarious. Sometimes these people that ask what to charge are the lowballers that everyone bitches about trying to figure out how to making a living before they go to poor house with the rest of the low ballers.

When I started my business 3 years ago I had some money in the bank to lose, knowing that all jobs are not going to go as planned. First year I lost some of it, second year I lost some more of it. Third year and I don't lose money on jobs that I bid anymore and am doing more business off from an estimate on a cost plus basis. The majority of my work is remodeling with a few new deck scattered here and there. I've learned a lot from some of the people on here and appreciate everyone of them.....MAC, Robert, Chris, 6string mason, Ed the roofer I can't thank you enough.

I can only think of 1 time that I have asked how much I should charge and that was after the job was done. By the time that the question was answered the invoice was already in the mail.

I had a Dodge once, the front bumper had a magnet in it for little cars such as Kia's! One pulled out in front of me while I was runnin' bout 45 mph. No more Dodge's for me until they take them dayum magnets out.

There's an old phrase (older than you) that's appropriate for these types of threads - GIGO - "garbage in, garbage out".

Come here and ask dumb questions and you'll get dumb, useless answers. And then top it off by insulting someone who's been here longer than you and you're just setting yourself up for more dumb responses.

It really doesn't take that long for someone new to do a quick search on the topic they are interested in. Search "pricing" and you will quickly find out that the topic of pricing, etc. is not received particularily well here.

Another old phrase for you: Eaton's doesn't tell Simpson's it's business...

Its not the bumper - Dodge got cheep & removed the Large Ram's Head Ornament from the hood (or on less expensive models - the lettering) which confused other drivers

Normally they knew that the horn on the truck wasn't working so they had better Dodge or get bucked by the horns - now its this cheap little emblem & they just don't get it

Hear hear!!! I know a guy doing the work should be able to figure out what kind of money he is wanting to make .... but does it hurt so much to give up a little info on what you are charging???? Sheesh.... ya would think he was asking for your first born!!!!

I would say $20 per door is too cheap.... but $100 per door is over the top!! But what are we charging for??? Just hanging the door???

When I price my jobs out I do each item separately. This is for my pricing ONLY.... the GC gets a TOTAL COST for the job.

This is for a pre-hung interior door (6'8" hollow core)
  1. Hang door (includes door stop) $30.00
  2. Install lock set $15.00
  3. Install casing $12.50 per side
I charge accordingly for 8', solid core or double doors.

how did you arrive at those numbers? and how do you know if you are actually making money on them or not?

that was the point to the OP...know your costs, then you can compare pricing with others...

Re: What Do I Charge?

why is this so difficult for people? suck it up work for little or no money, get some experience, loose money, get a good name for yourself, and one day things will go well for you. That is..... unless the economy tanks. If you can't handle those basic ideas then find a job that takes good care of you. IS IT REALLY THAT HARD TO WALK INTO A JOB AND NOT KNOW HOW LONG IT TAKES TO ACCOMPLISH A TASK?????!!!!! Can you not see the problems that might hit you in the face?!

I can drag my tools to a door opening, set a crappy hollow core door, in a so so framed r/o in less than twenty minutes with no handle or trim. (I've done it in ten) But then again I've been setting doors since I was 15. The quality isn't going to be great. But for 20.00 who wants quality. Just make it shut and open without sticking.

So lets do the math, I spend $30.00 on a gram of coke, have all my tools paid for, provide nails screws and shims at maybe $20.00 for the project, show up at 8am, set up my tools move the doors to their openings, by 9am i'm ripped and ready to do the work, at a half hour a door we'll say, I can do around fourteen doors in the day. I made $280.00

Not a bad take man. I had $50.00 in materials for the day, so that leaves me $230.00 bucks before taxes. Plus I still have some coke for doing base and case tomarrow.

I'll do the damn job!!! Call me!!! If you want to get rich don't waste your time with carpentry!!!!!!

I get 100.00 labor a door to remove old int. door and install new. That includes shim, trim and hardware. I got this price from a psychic at the flea market, I know she was authentic by the 3rd nipple she had pierced!

Thanks for keeping the thread going...
So you actually took the time to look through my old posts just to see what kind of truck I drive?? What's the point of doing that other than to beat boredom?

And another thing, I don't want to go around ticking people off so correct me if I am wrong... But to me on the pricing topics, sometimes I want to know what the "going rate" is to keep from overcharging people and making them mad, and of course want to make as much as I can.
So, if I was asking a similar question I would think the best approach would be to make a list of materials needed and their costs, how long I THINK it would take, whether I have high/med/low overhead, the price I THINK may be appropriate and say "okay guys what do you think, and did I leave anything out." It is easy to forget about something, and there are people that have not done a lot of price quoting that need a little help with it. I will say though that most of the times I have seen pricing asked, it has been approached poorly and lazily.

Like I said, don't wanna get people pist off... But the point of the forums is to have a place people can talk and give/recieve help. If that is not possible here then I suppose I would go find another forum.

You might make more if you step on the coke with some vitamin E and sell it to like minded folks for $25/gram

Taking contracting advice from someone named Fast Fred is like playing cards with someone named after a city or dating a girl with more tattoos than you....sketchy territory.
