The reason I posted this is because I was trying to get a reaction out of other carpenters, not electricians, but thanks anyway.
The contractor must have known enough to get you to come into this forum and question your pricing.

What do you charge to put the door in?? you gave 3-4 different prices so far.

You still did not answer what kind of truck do you drive??

did you feel the wind as the point went right over your head?

here is a 3 step plan of action for you....

1) Read this thread

2) Understand that you are the uneducated referred to in that thread

3) determine what you are going to do about it

it's as simple as that...you have no clue what you need to charge, so how can you even think that their price is wrong? You probably think that Ferrari's are priced too high....and that Smith and Wollensky should charge the same at Ponderosa....

well, not really, but it was fun to type...

the point is, you haven't determined your costs...you could be losing money at $100 a door and not even know it...if that's the case, the only difference between doing them for $100 or $20 is that at $100 you prolong the agony of going bankrupt...

figure out your costs, then you can become educated...

not bad for an electrician, huh

You got a recation that is for sure, I might be able to make a living at 20 bucks a pop, but no knobs, hardware, and there is no way I could buy new nails for that price, I would have to pick up the leftovers off the floor, shims would be too expensive too, hell I'll just set in the hole, and nail it up with my framer, oh hold it for 20 bucks I cant really afford more than a hammer.

Sometimes I feel sorry for stupid people ( maybe nieave is the better term).

I have got over a grand for one door before. I have got 100 bucks also.

In this country, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women.

sorry, wrong topic...

Re: What Do I Charge?

Dix, I think $150 seems really high.

I do my own trim, always have, so I've never hired a sub to do it and don't know pricing. I do know time for hanging doors. The time it takes me and/or my guys is how I would determine fair pricing. It seems strange to me that there is a lot of discussion about "how much" and "going rate" but nothing about "how much time".

I figure it's my time that's valuable so I think the way to determine prices is based on time. I know it takes me twice as long to hang a by-pass or bi-fold as a standard swinging door and about 4 times as long to hang a 1-3/4 SC (weatherstripped and threshold) as a typical HC. I would calculate units with a standard hinged door 1 unit, a by-pass and bi-fold being 2 units and a hinged SC being 4 units.

Typically, when hanging interior doors I will hang 3 sets of hc by-pass, 1 set of hc bi-fold, 10 hc single hinged, and one sc single hinged in a single house. This will take me about 5 hours. That means I've installed 22 door units in 5 hours or about 14 minutes per unit. This includes carrying the doors from the garage to their proper locations, installing, and putting away my tools.

I would round the time off to 15 minutes per door unit, figure my time at $60 per hour (about standard in my market), which gives me $15 per unit. Since the By-Pass SC unit is unusual, I'm not sure of the time but I would guess about 4 units (one hour) which would equal $60.

Clearly these prices are based on a whole house and doing the entire trim package. I'll have my tools set up for all the trim, not just the doors. Using the Lowes/Home Depot prices won't work. Those prices are for doing a single door in existing work, not a whole house full in new work. Using that pricing will make you a lot of money on the only job you ever get.

Is this bull **** or what?
I live in South Dakota and i'm sure that does not matter.
I would like to talk to some one to just get a idea of what to charge for some things.
If any one can help? It would be much appreciated.
I think you know the answer to your question.

As you can see no one here can tell you what to charge.

What help RBS gave you you scauffed at.

Re: What Do I Charge?

Are these split jamb doors or real doors? Is this house a cracker box or real custom home? I can set a split jamb door in about five minutes. The average cracker box has about 25 doors. 25 x $20 = $500 or $240 per hour. Then you gotta charge for everything else, you're on your way to a decent check, if it is a cracker box type of job. True custom work is a whole other gig. I try not to do cracker boxes anymore.

So you would charge or install as describe the easier of the two for 20 bucks a door?
