Re: Which Way Would You Go?
I do that on some things, but never a kitchen. Usually it is something that will need extensive scribing to fit into place that I don't want to take a chance of damaging the finish. That way when you go to install it it just fits in place.
What is the reason here?

I figured you would at least suspect that I was being a wise ass. At least I didn't keep you on the hook for long.
I love paint in place. All the caulking gets covered. Nails in the trim gets covered. And we can sand up any trouble spots.

Re: Which Way Would You Go?
That is the nice part about that kind of install. The moldings can be done nicer. I really like to have a softer edge on my moldings. Something you can't do with a prefinished molding. And it is nice for trouble spots. Nothing like a bit of sanding to make something look proper. This is the way almost all my installs use to be. Lots of 18th century stuff. Brush painted after, and they wanted to see some brush marks.

Plus we can treat everything a bit more aggressively without being on edge all day. Bondo is a great thing too.

Re: Which Way Would You Go?
The tougher the paint is the more it is a pain to put on. I usually ues a CV myself for colors because they are fade resistant, but I use a pre cat for clears because I don't like the water white of a clear CV. It is just bland and adds no character to the wood like a pre cat does. A slight amber, oil like look.

Re: Which Way Would You Go?
I use a natural oil based stain before I clear with CV just to bring some character out in the wood, I agree on CV over bare wood, it looks like plastic. Can you put CV over caulk? I would not think so.
I cannot use pre cat, they make me sick to my stomach even with my respirator on, I think I may be allergic to something in them.

Re: Which Way Would You Go?
I have switched over to an AG/OV (Acid Gas/Organic Vapor) cartridge, so much better. I still have the same problem when putting a stain under the CV, no character, it is just flat. Doesn't matter what the sheen is.

Re: Which Way Would You Go?
Paint = Benjamin Moore - Oil Based - Iron Clad
I like a hint of a brush stroke in the painted finish. Even if the paint is sprayed on, the final coat can be back brushed. Then if anything needs touched up down the line it can be done with a brush. Plus, a lot of homes I work in are older and the painted cabinet with the brush stroke finish looks like it "could" be original. All the CV paint jobs are too "automotive" quality for me personally. I offer it up as an option as I can get finishers to do that on site as well but the HOs usually turn away from the price.

Re: Which Way Would You Go?
If you spray the first coat of primer, sand, then spray and back brush the second coat of primer then you can spray all the finish coats and still have the brushed look.

Re: Which Way Would You Go?
Why did you have to readjust the doors? Painters messed them up, why didn't they readjust them?
