Veneer Help

I have several cabinets that need a VG fir tops. They are all over 96" long, I can't find 10' sheets and I don't want a plywood joint in the top.
I am thinking of veneering the top but I have no experience with this. I have several questions.
1) good places to order veneer
2) best substraight
3) adhesive (I don't have a vacume press

Tanks for any advice you can give me.

Dave

Re: Veneer Help

If you don't want to use solid and you have exhausted the search for 10' panels, you could find a custom mill to lay them up for you. This is quite common and I'm sure there are several choices in the north east. I just don't know of one.

I am currently working with this place on a large rift white oak order. I am extremely pleased with the level of customer service to this point. I got photos of the leaves right away and live samples shortly after for approval.

But it seems that someone should have 10' vg fir panels in Mass or Conn.

Leo might know

Re: Veneer Help

I'm in a similar spot with the design of an entertainment unit that will require a ten foot span of seamless plywood across the top of the bases. I was going to check with Atlantic Plywood in Woburn and with a place I've driven by a few times in Worcester. I think it's called Plywood Plus.

I'm currently on the 15-day D.L. with a torn back muscle and a scary mix of medications , so all my projects are in a holding pattern for now. Let me know how you make out in your search. I'd love to find a good local source for sheet goods.

Where are you in MA? I'm about 15 minutes from Worcester, but I've been doing a ton of work down on the south shore... Go figure.

Re: Veneer Help

If you decide to go ahead with veneering here is a link to a local vendor
http://www.berkshireveneer.com/product1.htm they should be able to set you up with 10' material

As far a substrate is concerned you can use anything that you would use for laminate. IMO most plywood has telegraphing tendecies so I try to avoid all but really good MDO and VC. You can use contact cement (brushed or rolled-not sprayed) for gluing the veneer down provided you use a 2 ply wood-over-wood veneer with a glue barrier to inhibit solvent (glue/finish) penetration. Roll out is done with a veneer scraper instead of a j roller/pinch roller.

I have done this quite a few times and I think it turns out quite nice. It is very much like working with laminate,

Re: Veneer Help

Has anyone used a phenolic backed veneer and sprayed contact adhesive to apply it?

Seems like a good way to go if you don't have a vacuum bag. A solid edge could be applied after lay up and cover the black line of the phenolic back.

Yes, it's exactly like working laminate and it works great provided you can cover the black line. The trade name of the veneer that I use is NBL which stands for "No Black Line" http://www.formwood.com/nbl-noblackline.html and it works much like a phenolic backed product.

Gus, I can't tell you how many times this stuff has saved my butt when fixing damaged cabinets. You can have an average end panel replaced in 10-15 minutes.

Re: Veneer Help

I will call Atlantic plywood tomorrow and see if they can get it for me. I have bought ten foot goods from them before but not in fir.

My shop is in Acushnet and do most of my work along the coast of south east Ma.

Re: Veneer Help

I shot that company an email to see if they have the sizes I need. Thanks for the link.

Although I have not done much veneer work I have always wanted to give it a try. I need to read up on it and try to make something for my house first.

Re: Veneer Help

I recently used some peel and stick cherry that I got from Atlantic Plywood. You might be able to get your fir in 10' sheets. Call and ask. They get this stuff from Veneer Technologies.
