Two Story Foyers With Second Story Hallway - Crown

When you have a two story foyer how do you handel the crown sizing. You need to have a large crown for it to make an impact all they way from the 1st floor, but you don't want it to overpower your standard 8/9' height hall way.

What do you normall do...you can see I put in a faux header at the hallway on my current job in the carpentry photo section but I am looking for other ideas....

You can do a built up crown, use case molding upside down with a nice edge or a 1-by board with a cap. It's all in the look you want to achieve and how much you want to stand out. Do a 4-5 foot run of various molding combinations and see from bellow what looks best.
Here is one example:

I don't have an answer for you but it's a great question I've pondered myself! I've never been happy with anything I've come up with.

This helps get that large crown be seen from below but it can end up over powering in a narrow hall with the lower ceiling...which is usally what leads out of the foyers on the second floor....a hall to the bed rooms and what not...
