Survey: Door Casing Instalation

What are all of the hand tools that you use when you install door casing (and only door casing), and which ones do you keep in your tool belt?

Just for installation? 5mm mech. pencil and pad in top pocket, 25' FatMax on belt. Angle finder in back pocket for older, settled homes.

Re: Survey: Door Casing Instalation

A finish nailer and two squeeze clamps.

Casing is pre-cut. some doors take the clamps to squeeze everything together tight.

Hi Journeyman only door casing 1 6' level,1 2' level, 4 1 1/2" brads, string line, nail punch, hammer, combination square, tape and pencil. If it's hard wood + 3/8" centre point wood drill for grain plugs. If its in block a plugging chisel and axe because the bricklayers forget to put the plugs in even though they've been paid for it.

Hi. This is very interesting. It's nice to be able to talk to someone from another country.

First, what do you use the levels for? Do you use them for the casing, or simply to check the door jamb before installing the casing?

Second, I have the same question about the string.

Re: Survey: Door Casing Instalation

I'll bet the string is to check the plane across the walls.
Doesn't everyone use a level?

That's the truth.

Combo square, hammer, tape measure, 1.3mm mechanical pencil, spring tool nail set (best invention ever), shims, shark bar, nippers

Re: Survey: Door Casing Instalation

Hi Journeyman the 2' level is to check the floor to see which jamb you fix first and also keep the head level. The 6' level is to check the walls, plumb the first jamb and check the timber for any undulations and fix with shims if necessary. The string is to tie my self up so the other guys can catch up LOL.After one jamb is provisionaly fixed and also one point on the other jamb a 1 1/2" nail is tacked at the top and btm of each jamb with the string you form a X across the face of the casing. You can then move the loose jamb so when the string touches in the middle you know that the two jamb's are 100% parallel with each other and on the same plain and there are no problems when you come to swing the door. Some times you must through the casing a bit I know this is not right but you must give the man coming after you a chance to get his cover on the walls, using the string will maintain that the jambs are parallel. On new block work the brickies should only go 5 or 6 course's high and move on but if it is raining they've got to make a living as well.To take it higher is to much weight for the wall and courses it to buckle and we just have to get round these problems.
