Structural Roof Bracket Reproduction Show

I put a slideshow together of an interesting project from last year. It shows many of the steps in building brackets that were both structural and ornamental... timber framing meets woodworking.

Hope you enjoy it:

Nice work
There were a couple of jigs in there (beading repeater and rosette jig)... but it sounds like some people don't need no stinkin' jigs.

My name is Brian. That was my first article for FHB. My second article will be in the next issue (on the bullnose crown project).

Nice words, I work at being a craftsman and enjoy passing information along here to others with the same goal.

'Spandrel' has such a better ring to it than bracket.

Nice work, though . . .

Re: Structural Roof Bracket Reproduction Show

It's a pretty flexible term, - - it's usually a diagonal arch across a right angle.

But yes, what you said too, - - you're defining a porch spandrel.

Here's a definition of it in reference to furniture

A curved, triangular or shaped bracket fitted into an otherwise open corner.

It also defines the trianglular opening a staircase stringer forms underneath.

Another use is on 'spanned' bridges.

One of several architectural meanings is,

The approximtely triangular shape between the curve of an arch and the rectangular frame above it

It's most frequent use is on the triangles formed on series of arches in their corners . . .
