Stringer Trim Detail
I should have some pics
, but I'm hoping others may with their solution... 2 flight stairway with a landing separated by a 2x4 wall. Square stock stringer trim follows the wall and must wrap around the corner and continue down the 2nd fight. The dimensions I believe are arbitrary since this problem exists regardless.... The problem: the height of the trim on flight A cannot be wrapped around the wall and match the height of flight B. We're missing by 2 something inches. Our solution: We're wrapping the corner on the first downward flight "A" (but we'd have to chamfer the wrap to get the miters to match) and squaring off plumb at the nosing of the first tread at flight "B" (edge of landing). We're Then butting the trim of flight B wherever it meets the wrap at the nosing. I hope I explained this well enough! I'll take pics tomorrow so this detail is easier to understand. |

Re: Stringer Trim Detail
Is this the basic layout that you are describing with a 2x4 wall between the two runs?

Re: Stringer Trim Detail
This is how I deal with having to change height for a stringer.

I would tend to bisect the angle from the tread/riser joint to the miter, or use a 45. just curious...is the chosen angle for the cope? Last edited by WNYcarpenter; 04-28-2009 at 10:24 PM. |

Re: Stringer Trim Detail
Basswood, how'd you come up with the angle for your miter? (I edited my previous post)...I would tend to bisect the tread/riser joint with the 5" base being returned into the stringer.
your miter ends just below the nosing. I'm probably missing something, but I'm thinking it has something to do with the profile.....I'm using square stock. obviously there was a reason for what you did.... Last edited by WNYcarpenter; 04-28-2009 at 10:44 PM. |

to the face of the riser, so the vertical piece will work. Can I confuse you some more?

Re: Stringer Trim Detail
the angle is carried through from the other side of the miter...extend the line of the miter, it cuts the out side angle in half.

Re: Stringer Trim Detail
WNY,
He simply intersected the heights/widths of the mouldings, & then bisected the angles. That way the profiles will meet up perfectly. If your using flat stock, the profiles are gone, & angles can be fudged somewhat. You can even fudge profile/bisect a little, but not so much as to change profile match too much. BTW, there is no cope in his picture. Bass, As always, you've go the answers, & the picts! Joe |

Re: Stringer Trim Detail
Basswood,
The wood you used looks like Poplar, even the cap molding. I didn't know it came in Poplar? Do you make your own molding? Steve |

Re: Stringer Trim Detail
WNY,
Looks like your questions have been answered by others. How did it go? Steve, Yellow-poplar is common here for paint-grade work. The base cap is part of the base ("speed-base")... no separate base cap. |
