Reminds me of when I order auto parts. No matter what it is they always ask if it has air conditioning?

Re: Stair Tread Instalation

I would try nailing glue and screw. That should work just fine.

I think glue would be a problem in a cross-grain situation like threads and risers to stringer/carriage. You can use pocket holes from below, I've also seen angle brackets used below. I think nails would be fine to. Could always go with a housed stringer staircase if you're motivated and have some cash laying around.

We always glue and nail. Nail through the back of the riser into the tread also, thats where most squeaks occur!

OK, why not use the BR-111 for treads? They have the bullnose for it. Granted it ain't as cheap as SYP.

Your treads can be glued and that should be fine with some pin nails to hold them in place while the glue cures. Now what kind of glue is the question. Construction adhesive....good, but don't let any seep out onto the woodwork. Gorilla glue...wicked good, but don't let this seep out onto ANYTHING!

Screws, fine, just plug them if you want to.

I used to wonder about the cross grain glueing too mickey, but believe it or not, it's OK. I guess the grains are going mostly in the same direction if you think about it. However, you definitely don't want to glue along the whole edge of the treads with a finished bullnose cap piece if you are using one. Only glue the first few inches, and put a nail in the back so the tread is allowed to expand and contract. If you glue the whole thing on the treads will crack in time.

I like your pocket screw idea though from underneath... add some construction adhesive to that and you'll have a solid, squeak free set of stairs.... you could use glue blocks from underneath too if you want a fastener free look.

Re: Stair Tread Instalation

Glue them down then place tread on the stringer. Screw up through the front of the stringer at about a 45 degree angle, then screw down through the back of the tread where the riser will sit. This will hide all the fastners. Simply finish nail the risers after and fill with putty. Some guys glue and screw down plywood to the stringers first for more support but its up to you.
