Re: Small Cabinet Pics

It depends. Are you just staining and clearing the pc or are you finishing it? The former is what a DIY would do and depending on the wood it can come out good or horrid. Woods like Maple, Cherry, Pine, Birch and Poplar are blotchy woods and are difficult to stain nice and easy. With these woods I usually apply a conditioner (stain base with no pigment) and wait for 20-30 minutes and then apply the stain. It slows the penetration down, however, there is a downside. It limits on how dark you can get the pc. I use all custom made colors so it won't matter for me, but if you are picking stain off the shelf it may not be dark enough for your project. After staining I will usually apply a toner coat to even any remaining blotchiness that has made it through and to bring the pc to its final color. After that it is just a few coats of clear with sanding in between.

Re: Small Cabinet Pics

I hate staining and painting - mostly because I'm no good at it. A few months ago I agreed to finish an oak built in I made against my better judgment. I made all the parts and applied the finish by hand before I made the boxes and built it. I totally underestimated how long the finishing was going to take. Live and learn. The HO loved it though.

Leo is right, of course,
conditioner first.
Taunton has a pile of good books
on finishing furniture and cabinetry.

Almost forgot....
Looks good.
