Skim Coat And Doorsets

I am to install some doorsets on a job which is to receive a skim coat of plaster. Would you guys do this after the plaster has been applied to avoid the jambs swelling?

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with the term "doorset" but as far as installing a jamb I would definitely install it before they skimcoat. This way if the latch side leg is kicked out a bit they can skim to it and your casing will go on flat.

Re: Skim Coat And Doorsets

I might be wrong but it sounds like he's talking about a plaster system, & not drywall. I still remember the plaster door jamb bucks my dad used for skimming plaster. They were set just to do the finish coat of plaster. If it is a true plaster system, I don't think setting the doors 1st would be a good idea. It would be way too messy for the finish door.

Like I said, I may be wrong about the wall system.

I was figuring he was talking about plaster too. As long as the jambs were not stain grade I would still set them first and take the slabs off. I'd personaly rather have the walls and jambs flush and deal w/ some plaster on the jamb, but that's just personal preference.

all plaster jobs in old houses consisted of first installing all trim and casings and then plasterin up to the jambs and casing and such.
