Gus and ALL,

What is the function of the slot at the bottom of the door jamb space and why the drop-leaf top?

Is it an air hole after they stuff the cat in the bottom cabinet? Sorry but I am not a cat person...

I say it's a slot for wrapping paper and the fold up table is for wrapping gifts.

Many creative responses here. The answer for this homeowner was that the slot at the bottom was for grocery bag storage and the drop-leaf top was a handy place to put things that needed to be put away in the pantry, on shopping day.

This project could be modified for use in a stud bay or two, then the top area would be a shallow spice and can good cabinet.

This was a quirky little project to try to make the best use of all the available space in a small kitchen.

All the best,

Bass

You should go and check my # 5 guess.

If this ever comes up again for you keep this in mind.

If there was a drawer directly above the flip up table, then there could be some things on the table and still be able to open the doors. May not have worked for you here for some reason but I think it is a good thing to consider where ever there is a door directly above a counter space. Just a suggestion.

What are these? Your zig zag collection?

Gus, That drawer just above the top is a good idea. Here is a pic of that little pantry over the stairs closed up:

It should have been a pivoting laundry chute trap door like TQ said. Or maybe a fold-out foot rest?
