Rx Glasses, Safety Glasses, And Sawdust... How Do You Deal With It?

hey guys,

I just got glasses for the first time ever in 33 years, bought two pairs... Standard safety glasses fit over them pretty well. Was advised by optometrist to keep soapy water handy and rinse them when they get fogged by sawdust... he said just wiping them off on my shirt will scratch them up... I have one pair basic plastic and one pair high index lenses....

I have memories from last year, running a chop saw all day, and especially ripping plywood with a siding saw, where I was just powdered with sawdust head to toe...

I'm curious how you guys that have to wear glasses deal with it? Obviously I can't wash and rinse my frames 20 times a day... anyone care to share some tips?

ps. my main concerns are carpentry and scraping paint...

jordan

I just proceed with business as usual until it dawns on me that the fading light level isn't due to the sun's going down. Then I <gasp!> clean 'em on my shirt tail.

Yes, they get nicks & scratches, but it goes with the territory. You might as well try to cut wood without getting any sawdust on your clothes. My current glasses are 5-6 years old and still quite usable. If you're on your first pair, you'll most likely need a new prescription withing a couple of years anyway.

Probably the biggest issue you'll need to deal with is the raw spots on the bridge of your nose after a day or two of flailing away in stinkin' hot weather.

I keep a 100% cotton bandana
in my pocket, exclusively for my
glasses. (blowing your nose then
cleaning your glasses with it is
a bad idea.)
If I can't rinse them with clean
water (grout cleaning bucket=
bad water source), I'll just "huff"
on them to fog 'em up and at least
dampen them a bit.

Yeah, you'll want another bandana
for a head band, to keep the sweat
from pooling inside the lenses.

Hubby has that same problem. We got a small kit from the sunglass place that has special cloth and a small aerosal can. Blow, squirt and wipe! Although they can fit in a pocket, he has them in the toolbox, truck, house.

I don't wear two pairs of glasses.... just one will do me.

My optometrist is one of the very many in this country who can get prescription safety glasses. And they're glass, not plastic, so they dont' scratch like I'm cleaning them with 40-grit sandpaper. And they're hardened glass at that, so they're very hard to scratch at all.

This way, I don't look like a cheap-ass dork wearing two pair of glasses.

Have real Rx glasses. They're not safety glasses as such but are polycarbonate. Not the small stylish kind, but full size. Got them about a year ago. I listened on how to clean them. I used to use Windex, 409, my shirt or rag. Supposed to use water and soap. That's what I use now. Clear water on the job, then one of those eyeglass wipes.

I got the anti - reflective this time for better night driving. It does help. Tip: The UV / anti reflective can be applied to the "inside" of the lens to better protect it from scratching. You gotta remember to ask. They seldom ask but it is on their order form to the lab.

yeah, I plan on getting a pair of those soon, I wouldn't use polycarbonate alone with a nail gun, that's crazy!

I just wear contacts when working. Rx glasses are too much of a pain to deal with.

Opthamologist told me that
you need to be extra careful
to wear eye protection with contacts.

anything but glasses OSHA-rated for nail impact is madness dude! High end eyeglass places can special order RX glasses that are the same as safety glasses in impact rating, with snap-on sidewalls... get some, if you're using regular glasses you're rolling the dice w/ blindness that's for life ya know?

call the fancier places in town first, costco and target won't have them...the frames and lenses come in a package together... they are about double cheap frames but still less than designer glasses, I think i got quoted about 2 bills, and that's from a fancy clinic in downtown seattle... they had like ferragamo and **** like that in their showroom...

Interesting......I just looked up the OSHA standard. ANSI Z87. Frame and lens designation. Looked at some online Rx places too. About $75 - first look. But local they're probably like you said about $200.

Something to think about. This spec and an upgrade to my current glasses.

30% if you have AAA.

My eyes changed about 5 yrs ago and now I need glasses for seeing up close and reading. For work I purchased safety glasses, they are the "wrap around" style. They have seperate prescription lenses that clip in behind the safety glass. The safety glass is polycarbonate and will even meet military shooting spec. So if they become damaged you mearly change out the poly lense for about ten dollars. The prescription lense cannot be damaged. Any good eye glass store will be able to find these for you. They are very comfortable and work great.

Re: Rx Glasses, Safety Glasses, And Sawdust... How Do You Deal With It?

working in this industry glasses will get dinged up. no if's and or but's.

i have 3 pairs right now. one is my good pair which i dont wear for work , my old glasses which are 5 4 years old and in rough shape then a pair of presription sunglasses. the sunglasses are in 1/2 rough shape as the frames were broken and i had to get the lenses recut to fit a new frame.

anyhow i dont have safety lenses. i also dont have the anti-glare coating. several coworkers have had the anti-glare and they said it acts likea magnet to dust and they were cleaning their glasses every five minutes when working with mdf. based on that i opted not to get that upgrade. i just have the mid range lense thinning and anti uv coating . sears has been good to me for deals on glasses at that
