Question Please...
Hello,
I am currently building a house (well, I'm having one built by a contractor who is clueless on this) and am having an issue with base shoe. We had prefinished solid oak floors put in and my contractor decided that we should put the base down first so that as few people as possible would be on the floor after it was down. He assumed we would want base shoe and that would cover any space between the floor and base. Problem is, we aren't crazy about the base shoe at all, especially how it has to be mitered where it meets the plinth blocks at our doorways. I know that may be a common thing to do, but it is driving us crazy when we hold the shoe up to the base and see how far it sticks out, especially where it sticks out past the plinth. My question is, does anyone know of a molding that we could use that is smaller than 1/2 inch in depth? We actually need it to be 1/4 inch in order to not stick out past the plinth. The guy who is making the shoe that we thought we were getting says he cant make it any smaller and swears that we can't rip it down after we get it because it will break. Any thoughts at all on this would be greatly appreciated. Or any ideas on where we might get a shoe or quarter round that is itsy-bitsy. Thanks in advance. Sorry if I'm annoying, I'm desperate. Re: Question Please...
Julie,
just cause I caught this before the mods did, please go to our sister site www.diychatroom.com This site is for professional contractors to help each other out, and most here will frown on non-pro's posting and asking questions. Oh, 1/4" molding will most likely split and break when installed, or run into with a vaccum cleaner, so he is telling you the truth. good luck with the house. |

Re: Question Please...
Thanks for the advice. I know about the rules, its just that I already posted about this on that very forum you are talking about as well as a few other questions a few weeks back and never got any replies. I thought that going straight to the pros was what I should do. Like I said, I am desperate and am just hoping that someone will be glad to take a minute to help a gal out.
Thanks for the reply. Julie |

Re: Question Please...
you're welcome. I know it can be frustrating looking for answers when in your situation. You may even find someone who will make something that you are looking for. I just have this feeling (from experience) that anything that small will break sooner or later, and your contractor knows this also. he doesn't want to do it once and have to come back and fix it when it breaks, I can't blame him for feeling that way.

Re: Question Please...
They do make a 1/4" x 1/4" quarter round moulding. You'd have to have it nailed on with a pin nailer though. I think a brad nailer would split it. Pin nailer for the fine architectural mouldings.
I assume you're in the New England area or your builder is from there. This is a typical system around here. I never liked it much myself. They make wood flooring protectors.
