Talk to alot of people and hand out alot of business cards.
Get few jobs under your belt. Word of mouth by customers is how I grew my business. I continued working for someone else until I could sustain myself with my work.

Says you're a finish carpenter. Go to the kitchen & bath showrooms. Stop at jobsites. Stop by millwork shops. Sub to larger companies for the finish work & trim. Get your name out there!! Stay away from the box stores if you're really any good.

Re: Question To Ask You Guys

ditto here, what they said. if i could add one thing, it would be not to work cheap for gc's just to get work, i have been there when subs have come on the site to talk to the contractor and herd them tell the subs that they would only give them so much money to do a job, and after they left the contractor has said, they'll be back, i know they will work cheap. not that it was good for the gc to talk in front of anyone else, it does happen on a job site, so don't give yourself that reputation to them, wink

Re: Question To Ask You Guys

if you are around town and see a guy getting out of or into a truck a construction company sign on the door, ask if they have any finish work going on currently. they might be looking for someone to sub some work out to, or they might get a card so that they can call you if something comes up.

This brings up more advice, always have a card handy.

Re: Question To Ask You Guys

I was once told when someone asks for your card give them more than one and I was Told To " Wallpaper the town with your cards"

Try joining a network group like a chamber group, BNI , or a leads group, this worked very well for me and I had to leave the leads group because I could not be available for the weekly meetings.

Go to techknowledge.com it is Mike Gorman's site , he has a book about growing your business , lots of good networking tips and etc.
