Pre-painting Crown Molding

I'm thinking about painting all my crown before I cut and install, then come back and fill the holes and do a quick face only final paint on the molding.

Anybody ever do this like the way I just described.?

Re: Pre-painting Crown Molding

If I am going to do it or have one of my carpenters do it then I like to prepaint/stain crown and even base. If I know I am going to use a painter then I let him/her worry about that. One thing I am not good at is detailed painting. I have come far enough in life to admit that..lol.

I think most of us were talking about doing crown molding in a finished house.

If we didn't paint it, chances are the HO would and make the job look bad.

In new construction i have never seen anyone paint any trim before installing.

If its stain grade, it always gets stained before installing.

Is that the really slick one you cut with scissors and sticks up with adhesive?

This is supposed to be a forum for professionals. I would hope that any "professional" trim carpenter is not installing prepainted HD crown.

Maybe you were joking...I hope.

Re: Pre-painting Crown Molding

WOW interseting remark . I am an interior trim contractor for over 20 years I install for national builders. Pre painted crown is wood thats been pre painted hence the word "pre painted" Most builders actually require it to be pre painted that way its already been sealed from the weather. If un painted material sits in a garage it will do all kinds of funky things. I would rather put up pre painted less time to finish, means more money in my pocket.
