Piano Hinges

I am wondering what you guys think. I can install piano type hinges two ways. On the 'flat' so you see the whole hinge, or into the 3/4 material, so you just see the spine. The first way is typical, the second way involves screwing into the raw edge of a piece of 3/4 birch ply. Is that asking for trouble, even if glued?

Re: Piano Hinges

I recently built a 7ft armoire with 2 full length doors (I can't send the photos because this site has a 200 KB limit & my photos are 1.18 MB. I used 6 ft piano hinges in 3/4 birch with no problem. I pre-drilled all of my holes & used glue in some of the screw holes that were suspect. The doors are quite heavy but piano hinges take so many screws that I don't worry about them holding up at all.

Re: Piano Hinges

I fasten them into the edge of 3/4" birch all the time, and never have any problems. If it is something that I think might take more "abuse" than "use", I put a longer screw in every third or fourth hole. There are also piano hinges that wrap, so if seeing a flange on the back side of the open door is not offensive, they add plenty strength.

Re: Piano Hinges

insert them into a new thread or into this one. copy the link from under the picture in photobuckets album, then in this box for a new reply there is an image of a picture at the top of the box, if you click on it it will display a window asking for the link, that you just previously copied from photobucket, just past it in.

Re: Piano Hinges

Go to the Photobucket page and copy the link address in the address window and post it here or you can copy the "direct link" next to each picture and paste it in your next post. Or just simply copy and paste the "img link".

Examples: (my album is "private so it will ask you for a password. Make yours public)

http://s212.photobucket.com/albums/cc97/MalcoNewYork/ (entire album)

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...IMG_0365-1.jpg (direct link)

The picture you see was generated by copying "img code" and pasting it here.

This is the simplest way to do it!

Re: Piano Hinges

The left door is about 24 inches wide by 61/2 feet tall. The right door is only a foot wide. All screw holes are pre-drilled & some holes are glued. It's been months since I built it & no sagging.

Re: Piano Hinges

Examples of Piano-Hinge use:

1.) (unpainted door, missing one knob):

2.) (unfinished, unpainted area, we later installed the baseboard sections, over the lower area of the door too):
