Old Skool Adjustable Shelving

Ever run into old cabinets with adjustable shelving supports let-in like this. Good practice with a dovetail saw.

They sure had skill with hand tools back in the day.

Quite possibly. In clear pine, those guys could probably make short work of it.

For our generation of power tool users, seems insane, but have you seen this video:

http://video.google.com/videosearch?...&hl=en&tab=wv#

I'd like to try that.

Me too. There is a furniture building school here in Philadelphia that offers a handcut dovetail course and I'm planing on taking the next one in June. Not cheap but i think it would be something cool to learn in a classroom setting.

Those are called sawtooth shelf brackets.

And there was a time you could buy them in 8' lengths, not sure if anyone manufactures them now.

I just saw those for the first time a couple of weeks ago in an old piece of furniture. Pretty good idea. You could probably cut up a whole mess of them in a rack.

Seen them occasionally, not so much anymore. Around here (Michigan) I see mostly the radius ones. They have the half-circle cut out every 4" to 6" or so instead of the sawtooth pattern along each support, and the shelf support is just a 1-by with a radius at the ends, like a Popsicle stick. It slides into the matching radius of the support and the shelf sits on them.

Wow thats funny, I just did a kitchen that the owner insisted on having a version of those in the uppers that had glass doors.

I cut the saw tooth pattern with the cnc in maple ply with a mdf core. So the inside corners have a 1/2" radius unlike the old timer's original. But the HO loved them and the check cleared.
All done in the power tool age

We have to go back soon and rehang the doors after paint and put on the pulls. I'll snap some shots and post them then.

Interesting... you could drill those in a 1x2 on a drill press and then rip it in two to make matched sets. Hmmm.

Maybe I'm seeing something wrong, but aren't those upside down? I'd think you'd want the flat side facing down (like in the original photo), so there was some bearing surface other than the sloped face.

Heck, anybody could put them in right side up.
My feeling was that the angled side down would snug them up a little with the weight of the shelf.

I might have blown it but like I said before, HO is happy and the money has changed hands.

Let's just say, they are the opposite
of every set I've ever seen, and that's
more than a few.
Not sure why they wouldn't work though.

Just seems like if they didn't "pinch" at the exact same spot, they could lock in out of level.

Gus will post back and let us know.
Right?
We all know he just did it,

So the jury seems to be back and the verdict seems to be that I put them in upside down. Thanks to all of you a little bit of the fun just got sucked out of that job.

They seem to work fine though. There is not enough room to get them out of level. The sticks are fairly accurate.
When I chose which way to put them I played with it a little and the "upside down" way seemed to keep the stick registered in there a little better so I went with it.
I'll be sure to keep you boys away from this house. I wouldn't trust you with Mrs HO anyway. Loooker

They have other ones in the house with the drill press method too.
I happen to like my upside down version myself. Ha!
