Ok, now I am confused

All right, what is this?

Old wood flooring from my house, using a few pieces I cut out to do some old floor register patching and making a few other things from it.

I thought it was doug fir, now I am not so sure.

My monitor color sucks, but
it looks like white oak from here.

Rub a little oil on it, see what
it looks like then?

I orginally thought it was doug fir.

It didn't smell like oak, and the shavings look like a pile of Fir but, I guess I have not seen wormy Fir.

Possibility of Chestnut?

I'm with Neo, white oak is first thought.

Is there any hint to medullary rays?

Fir is out because of the open grain.

You are right about the verticle grain, I wanted it for what I was making.

I am telling you, I know what oak smells like when you cut, it burns my nose a bit, this didn't.

Pretty sure it's white oak as well.

Isn't chestnut a little darker?

I was just looking at that last picture on another site.

That is a picture of oak right?

These boards do not have that visible ray.

All I can see is the early wood pores, my eye can not see the rays.

This is rift cut white oak, no stain, flat finish. Still the most probable choice.

maybe I'm out on a limb, but could it be red oak? again, you have the advantage of seeing it in person, but from the picture, I'd put money on oak of some kind.

The smell of reclaimed wood is often different than new lumber. Especially when just trimming the ends.

What are we trying to do here anyway?

Can you get a better lit, in focus shot
of the end grain?
From what you say it could be chestnut,
but I haven't seen that much quarter sawn.
