Thanks Greg, I'm new to the writing and photography gig (this is my second article). Kinda fun though.

Thanks Tom, being able to pass ideas on, whether via forums or in print is an honor too. I told a guy last week that there are people that do the kind of work I do, in towns large and small, all over the planet (many among the members of this forum)... I just take the time to document the work and have been lucky enough to be asked to write articles about it.

Glad you liked it. It is one of those things that you might find easier than it looks. It is easier to do than to explain. This became obvious when I was writing about it.

I bet it is, you did a nice job, everything is nice and clear, explanatory, and everything looks great. It is a good start and I will look forward seeing more of your work and publications, and if you ever decide to do a book, I want a signed copy . You are a true craftsman Bass, keep up the good work.

Greg,

I appreciate the compliments. I have a few less ambitious, more practical, articles (and tips) in the works now, but these things often take months to make it into print. If I ever get to do a book (maybe just a compilation of articles) I'll be happy to sign a copy for you.

ALL,

Here is a link to the article, for those who may not get FHB:

Thanks Tom. I emailed my editor about the "Brain" typo.

It looked like some issues with fractions in the online version too.

Cheers,

Brian

Re: Nice Work Bass

I looked at your website a couple of months ago and saw the pictures of that job-really interesting stuff.

I've got a question if you don't mind; is there any chance a crack will occur between the wood and plaster due to expansion/contraction?

Re: Nice Work Bass

I Googled "profile knife" & didn't come up with anything like what you used in the article? How much do you charge your customers to customize the corners like that? I imagine that if you have to ask, then you can't afford it.

Thanks Neo,

So far FHB does not seem to mind it that I post some of the stuff that they have the copyright on... since I generated the content for them... and perhaps because it might get a few more people interested in their magazine.

Cracking is possible, but most likely during the first year (already passed the one-year point). There are several things that manage that risk: Checked moisture content of the wood crown (below 9%), dowels and double wire lath fastened to the crown (like rebar in concrete), short crown runs and coped ends allowed to move, etc.

Thanks, now that you mention it, my wardrobe is rather limited.

Hmmm. Now that could be an interesting assignment in creative journalism.
