New Miter Saw, New Table

A couple years ago i replaced a broken hitachi12" miter saw with the new version. after about 6 months i decided to build a decient table, and used the new yankee one as a guide. i made the main part and never finised the rest. another year went buy and i realized i didnt like the saw very much so i didnt worry about finishing.
i went out and bought a new saw on friday (dewalt 718) and figured up a way to make a nice table than the last one. what i wanted was something that was only about 5-6' long with removable sides, and atleast 4' wings.
what i came up with was a 5'x18" center with 4'x10" wings that sit on the center with Z clips made of plywood and chest clasps. while i was at it i added some provisions for some crown stops.
sorry for the crappy iphone pics. will try to find my real camera one of these days.

Re: New Miter Saw, New Table

I will be using the saw for the first time today other than making the table, but used the same saw that belonged to other people. I liked it.
More pics for sure with some of the details a bit more clear when I find my real camera.

I have heard alot of bad things about the 718...watch your arbor washers, the inner ones tends to wear out and cause blade wobble.

I'm sorry but i have used that saw and it is h.o. quality Wobbled out after 6 months. The dewalt single compound 12'' Sliders for anything besides skirtboard your tolerances(quality) suffers.

It was prob the inner washer...it rubs on something, forms a ridge and causes wobble. I just fixed a friends DW706 b/c of that

Re: New Miter Saw, New Table

I used tohave the same problem with my dw718, thanks to craigslist i have no more problems!!
Seriously reconsider th 718, dewalt is forced now to change that model since the competitors a all coming out with 10" model that boost 12" cutting capacity!!

I have one in pieces in my shop. The bearings are gone and it damaged the armature. Will cost me aboout $100 in parts to fix it. I hate to do it but it is to new to chuck.

I loved the function of the saw while it lasted. I have not used one I liked better ergonomicly (sp). But I need them to last more than a year.

Re: New Miter Saw, New Table

Howdy Chris------This post drifted off the topic a bit(sad because I also own a DW718)

Nice design on the table--I've been trying to refine a job site miter table that supports the work, has crown stops and is light and compact.

If you don't mind I'll be stealing your crown stops(when you are not looking) and use them on my next attempt at a table.--------Mike--------

Re: New Miter Saw, New Table

One of my carpentry subs has the same saw for about 2 years with no problems at all. They have an older model that's is worn slightly but even that's not horrible for a 4 year ol saw that gets used almost daily.
If it ends up sucking then I will have to try again.

Add to that, I am not a dewalt fan by any means so the decision to buy a dewalt was not an easy one. If the bosh would cut tall base I would have got that one. I do too much base like that to have to deal with the same problem my old saw had.

The table will be getting a version 2 in the next couple weeks. It needs some tweeking.

Re: New Miter Saw, New Table

I'm with you on that Chris,I've had a number of 12" saws over the years--Bosch--the one piece fence went out of whack twice--DW 12" bearings went(lots of service before it died)

High end Delta--I love that one-dead bang accurate--And the DW718 --fine job site saw-light compact and it'll cross cut a closet shelf.
I'll see how long it lasts--I'm sure it will pay for itself time and time again before it dies.

That's all I ask of a tool.---Mike---

Looks nice is it heavy? What are the changes?

Just for the record I love the DW716 was better than the Bosch slider it replaced.

Hey mike woods look at this ladder design for a saw stand. Sorry not trying to hijack to much. You can slide the saw all the way to the end leaving 12' support. Then slide it back to the center to have support on each side.

Re: New Miter Saw, New Table

That ladder design is pretty cool. I thought about something like that buy i wanted to be able put it in the cab in my truck when it's raining.
The change is I want to add a fence on the wings with the first part being movable so I can bevel. Not sure how to do it yet though. This table is not to heavy, easily carried.

If the saw was moved forward,
you could add another T-track
and mount your fence to them.
It could be adjustable and removable.
Maybe?

I see the latch holds the front
of the wing, what holds the back?
