Nailing Strips For Crown

I am hanging nailing strips for behind crown and was going to use finish nailer (16ga) to secure nailing strips to the studs. Then, I am going to attach the crown to the nailing strips with 18 ga nailer or should I still use the 16 gauge. This is for 5 inch crown. Smaller crown I just use my finish nailer 16 ga and shoot them right in the studs. Does this sound correct.

What type of crown...MDF, stain grade, etc??

For MDF I think 16g is going to be fine. I recently hung some 8 1/4" MDF crown using my 16g nailer and 2" nails.

Re: Nailing Strips For Crown

I only use nailing strips when there is no way to shoot to the studs, such as running crown across an interior brick wall. Everything else gets shot with 16ga nails, 2 or 2 1/2", whatever I am using in the gun at the time. Never have had any problems. I will use 18ga /2"brads in stain grade to minimize the nail head spots, but even with the 16ga nails, if you use some effort to place the nails in the heavy grain lines or at areas of converging grains, the putty spots are nearly invisible, especially with T-head nails placed parallel to the grain.
