Nail Storage??!?!

Question for you all about nail storage. I have recently re-opened my box of 15ga. stainless gun nails ($225/box) and didn't like what I saw. From sitting in my trailer driving all over hell the nails started to fall apart from the film holding them together. I do all kinds of work so I don't used all my stuff everyday. Any one else have this problem and if so how do you store them so this doesn't happen. I also opened my box of 5000 2 1/2" trim nails and some of those broke apart as well. Any ideas guys??

At 225 a box, they get stored in my garage. I only keep several clips on hand in the truck unless I'm on a big job, then they get locked down in a site box.

Re: Nail Storage??!?!

Might try stuffing newspaper in the box to fill up the gap. It would keep them from josseling around. Sounds pretty simple, but it might do the trick.

I have 2 plastic boxes with small divider boxes insinde them. This keeps all the nails/staples organized. I have pieces of styrofoam to put on top of some of them to keep them from bouncing around.

I'm with Lone. I carry a hand full of things like that along with galvanized 16s..varied sizes of finish and and brads in a tackle box. The boxes stay in the garage unless I know I need a box...It's usually a planned thing

Re: Nail Storage??!?!

Nails and screws go in a sys-box for me.

Different size boxes in it, hard foam presses over the boxes when it is closed.
Nothing will get mixed up pr screwed up, no matter what I do to that box.

This my favorite storage box. The little trays are removable so you can take them out to your work area. Great for screws and finish nails.

I agree, - - this is the same storage box I use, about $15 at HD. Plenty of compartments for storage of both 16 and 18 gauge finish nails.

For added protection, it needs to kept 'slide free' in the truck, and it's best to carry it only on the flat.

I use the H.D "systainer" as well. If I don't keep it flat in my trailer during travel I find that the smaller screws can migrate from one box to others. Other than that, I love it and plan on at least one more. The price is right...

Framing nails go in ammo cans.

Trim nails go in either ammo cans or those Stanley boxes as mentioned above.

Screws and fasteners go in the Stanley boxes too.

Must keep flat, but they are extremely durable...even for $15.

I recently bought a Husky two-tier organizer that's a little larger than the Stanley boxes and it seems to be nice too.

Re: Nail Storage??!?!

Here's a pic of some of these cases as stored in my truck, - - the shelvings they rest in are angled back at about 7 degrees so they can't slide out.

They're reachable without even climbing in.

I never got around to painting them gray yet . . .

Re: Nail Storage??!?!

Yes I have those stanley boxes as well and I am in love with them. I have such an OCD problem and they are the best things since sliced bread. I am thinking I will just pick up another one and pack my boxes with nails then get some foam and wedge them in there to prevent the movement. WOW this solution was right in the front of my trailer a long time ago!! Thanks guys!

Re: Nail Storage??!?!

i carry screws in a box similar to those stanley containers.

use to carry finish nails in clip top sandwich containers but they broke too easily. i carry a shopmade tool caddy which i have a drawer in the bottom which i would store drill bits and small tools in, then i switched to carrying my finish nails in it. 5 slots each will hold at least 3000 nails just depends on what size and what gauge. my 23 gauge nails get stored in little plastic containers that i get at the dollar store which also go in the caddy but in the large open area of it where my glue, drydex and odd hand tools go

It is a bit spendy but, it is the best thing I have used to store nails, screws, and several other things as well.
Never been able to make a mess of it when the lid is closed. I shook it, dropped it, every time I opened it everything was in its place.

Re: Nail Storage??!?!

I wish they had a deeper version of these boxes:

I have 4 of them now that I use for wire straps, staples, contacts, box connectors etc.

I keep a small stash of nails and screws at the ready in one of these:

The rest of the bulk boxes get dumped in a giant metal bin-rack that I got from an old service van of a major telephone company. When the little kit gets low I reload it from the big stock in the van.

Re: Nail Storage??!?!

Just tell them you want a sys 2 or 3 box. They would just need to order taller boxes.

Off you go and submit your request!!
