My "trailer"

Since I found out how to post pics - though I'd throw this set out there.

This is my work "trailer"- Yes Sanford and Son IS still alive, I can fit 10 gallons of sh*t in a 5 gallon bucket!

The 2 sliding ramps are for my SCMS and tablesaw/stands - made from plywood and garage door tracks/rollers.

I will have to post pics of it full sometime, but HOORAY for me, my tools are on site since I finally have something to do!

Brilliant!

I have some garage door track and rollers just laying around. I'm gonna do that sliding ramp deal for my trailer.

I think more carpenters will be looking to use minivans... especially when gas prices head back up. I worked out of minivans for a decade. Now I just have too much stuff and use a full size van and a trailer.

My favorite work vans were VW's. Had an old camper van and then a Eurovan. I can post pics of that set up if you want to see it.

Re: My "trailer"

This is the VW Eurovan. Made a couple of drawers for the back. And some shelves with curbs on them, one shelf sat on the back bench seat and I seat belted it into place.

I had every tool a basic trim carpentry business needs in there. Two pics of the tools in the VW and one of the shop that popped out of the van:

Seif,

Spent my whole life in Omaha, always liked the sooners!
I assume you also know that there is THE BIG RED in Norman

Don't mind the fuel efficiency, but , sure would like to have a real trailer someday.

Good luck this year to your Huskers.

BOOMER SOONER,
Roger

Thanks Bass,

Ramps are acually pretty simple to do. The carriage is large enough for the wheels of the stands to rest on, while the hinged ramp is sized to fit a specific machine. The ramp has various stops mounted on it to keep the whole assembly stationary while transporting. Pull the ramp out, roll up the machine to the carriage stops, lift ramp and machine up as one unit and slide into place. There are 2 bolts that are placed through the ramp and into the frame to keep the assembly locked into place.

Roger

I hear ya on the trailer thing. Been waiting myself for a good "deal". Maybe I'll be able to find something this summer. For larger jobs I've been using my brother's enclosed trailer be bought new last year. Why buy the cow, huh?

ps. my wife grew up south of ya -- as a Monarch. Nice to finally see a NEB compadre amongst the pros. Their aren't many of us here. Last time I checked- there was three. Best to ya. BJ

hey bass what type of gas mileage did that thing get loaded with tools. i always liked the VWs but never thought about one for work.

i currently have a dodge dakota quad cab pickup and need something that i can fit longer stock in - it only has a 64" bed. its packed to the gills and pretty much can hold all my tools but materials are another problem ;-)

i have been debating a E150 but gas mileage has held me back from buying one. also debating a trailer but then my already crappy gas mileage will only get worse.

Pretty much why they build trucks with a 8' bed. If you have a work truck without one I'm going to say you are not a tradesman, rather a manager or what have you. If you buy a truck for real man's work with a bed below 8' you are crass and deserve the problems you will no doubt see in the future. Seriously think.

EuroVans...
What a nightmare to work on when I was in autobody...hell all VWs suck to work on, the EuroVan was by far the worst...

Not true, I get along just fine with my Ford Ranger with a rack on top of it. Just have to watch the weather some days...altho, on my old ranger, I had a cap and it had an over the cab rack as well....Could Carry material and have all the tools in there.... Could I carry 20 4x8 sheets....no, but I never needed to, anything that size I would just have dropped off at the job site by the lumberyard.

That's why God invented
lumber yards and gave 'em
delivery trucks.
My next one will be a minivan.
It's just to haul tools, some mud,
and my ass.

i don't feel like i need to explain myself but your commment is a little out of left feild, so i thought i would address it.

i actually agree with you to a point. i am a GC, but i do work onsite most days any of my crews are on site. that doesn't mean i need a big truck and with gas prices i prefer what i got. i do have a V8 and it pulls trailers just fine for when i need more space.

up until recently my lumber yard would deliver one 2x4 for me. so i didn't need to move material much and i have a 10' roof rack for anything else.

i have had the truck for years and am looking to get rid of it. it was my personal truck until my E350 super duty broke and i sold it at the time b/c i didn't really need anything bigger. now b/c of the delivery situation and that i downsized so i can be in the field more and my yard closed up and i am stuck picking up my materials from Big boxes - i need something bigger and recognize it but don't need a huge truck to run around town in all the time.

i have been looking at all types of vehicles lately and will probably buy something towards the end of this year if things pick up.

I have been driving Dodge Ram 1500 series quad cab with a short box for over 6 years (I am on my third).

I am a full time contractor (which includes being the manager, HR director, worker, and janitor!) I think your comments are a little funny!!

I do have a 14x7 enclosed job site trailer - so I don't worry too much about not having the space, but I do pick up materials a lot - never had a problem getting anything in my girly little short box!!

If you need to carry longer items (framing, trim, siding, canoe, etc) their is a new product I saw for the first time called "Big Bed"

This ingenious device slides into your trailer reciever and gives you support to haul long stuff!

Their website is www.seginsinc.com

I have an old dodge ram that I use a lot with a 6' bed. I do plenty of work in a metropolitan area that requires parallel parking on very busy small streets. I can fit my truck into small spaces and load/unload from the side if I am in too tight of a spot to drop the tailgate. Works great for me!
