Mortising Doors
What do you use? I've always done the occasional door with chisel, but have a job coming up requiring mortising for 15 doors. I think I may want to buy a motising jig, only one I have seen is Porter-Cable.

Re: Mortising Doors
The plastic PorterCable one is the one I use. It works great. Practice on a scrap piece as to get the positioning and depth right.

Re: Mortising Doors
For lock mortising
http://www.contractortalk.com/f3/mortise-locks-5149/ or I guess you're just talking about hinge-mortising 'Hinge-Mate' hinge-mortising kit works fine for individual hinges.

Re: Mortising Doors
Leo, I believe that he is referring to hanging doors not making them.
BTW, I have the Delta jig as well. It was originally Dad's and God only knows how many holes it has drilled. I STILL get a kick out of telling people that I can drill square holes, it really baffles most of them. LOL

I think Leo's in 'lock-mortising' mode, - - I was thinkin' the same thing at first. Some of us love over-complicating things!!

Re: Mortising Doors
I use the PC jig too. Anyone know where to find replacement bits without having to order?

The porter cable is a piece of ******************** that will break if you look at it the wrong way. Trust me, I go through a revolving door at HD returning them.
Save yourself the aggravation and go to www.templaco.com. They make the best ones you can buy and are cheap. |

Re: Mortising Doors
For the amount of doors you have coming up on this job, I would definitly recommend picking up either a porta-cable or bosch hinge routing jig. You could mortise your doors very quickly, and take the jig to the doorframe and mortise those out to match the door for an exact fit. Check out amazon.com Tool Crib for the hinge jigs. Best selection of tools, more so than the average lumber yard or home center. Best of luck with your project

Re: Mortising Doors
I would second everything awidmeyer said.
A lot of places that sell baldwin locksets will loan you a portercable lock mortiser for a couple days by the way. Bosch and templaco are also the best on the market for the other stuff far as I'm concerned. No sense buying cheap if this is how you make your living. regards, clampman |

Re: Mortising Doors
what about a sharp pencil, and a sharp chisel?..Thats what I use..I did use one of those Porter Cable jigs.. I lifted my router out without letting it stop first..it tore the jig to ********************..the hinge mate looks pretty cool though

Re: Mortising Doors
spend the money, buy a full length metal hinge jig set, pc or bosch, don't waste time or accuracy with the cheap junk

Re: Mortising Doors
Wow i have seen them do that on this old house. They have a beautiful long like metal jig for that. They have another jig for installing the old fashion hardware on a door. I just assumed all contractors had one of those. But they do look EXPENSIVE. The long jig is for cutting hinges into doors.
