Minimum Door Width

is there a minimum width for cabinet rails and stiles?
I'm thinking about making some doors 1 1/2" wide in poplar, but worried it will twist up easiely...
any words of experience are appreciated!!

edit: more info... 2 doors flush mount recessed panels... each door 40" tall by 12 1/2" wide

Re: Minimum Door Width

Haven't worked with poplar. I use 2" rails & stiles. I think 1 1/2" should be no problem. I think a lot of people use 1 1/2" stock for the facing.

The type of panel will also determine what happens to the door as well. I'm assuming you're using some plywood panel which will be more stable than a solid, glued up panel.

Re: Minimum Door Width

2" stiles and rails give you a little more room for egde routing. 35mm cup hinges might be tight with 1 1/2" stock. You could also add a mid rail to help keep things straight

Re: Minimum Door Width

maybe i'll go with 1 3/4 to keep it safe. the panel will be ply. no profile on either edge, square is what they want.

Re: Minimum Door Width

I try to use a minimum of 2", sometimes 2 1/4.
Is there a reason for 1 1/2, like trying to match whats there?

I use poplar all the time on my paint grade stuff. Just be picky when you look through the pile.
