MDF, Pine Or Poplar

I built a lower end home a year and a half ago used mdf. looked pretty good but did have some problems with case corners and base copes. Currently Im building a mid priced home and wanting some opinions on which product is wiser for this project. I'm in the midwest. The realtor not much help- not sure she knows the difference.

Re: MDF, Pine Or Poplar

What style of trim are you wanting to do? Are you going to want to paint or stain? I never use MDF for trim, unless I'm doing a block base with a trim on top. Cause there is no coping. If you're painting I would use finger joint pine, you can get it in dozens of styles and sizes. And if you're going to stain you can get a "clear" pine that is solid with no knots. But unless all the other woodwork is pine in your house, the stain won't match everything else exactly. Poplar is also a very good choice cause it's a hardwood but I can't usually get it in the styles of trim that I normally use. It's great for painting, but it ,like the pine, won't stain like other species of woods.
