Re: Mantel Design

I assume the flat spot that sticks out is for the corbells, if not, I hate that part. I would also make the mantle top follow the crown so that it has the same step in it.

Yes and no about the top following the crown If these are corbels then they would naturally support the top. Without corbels yes it should follow the crown but I don't know what the customer wants either.

Re: Mantel Design

IMO the flat trim below the crown needs a detail along the bottom edge. Like some base flipped upside down. It just looks too square to me. You could also add base to the bottom of the legs.

Also make sure you meet the code for the distance required between the mantel and the actual fireplace. I think it is usually 12".

However, those kits don't fit every application. This design can be scaled for the application and built to fit perfectly. It could also be rendered in birdseye maple or curly birch, etc. Can't find that at the Borg.

Re: Mantel Design

The smaller piece of cove moulding beaneath the larger piece of crown should be changed to a supporting moulding profile(the curve should round outward and point up) or eliminated like in Leo's drawing.

Its one piece of crown. Standard profile at a local millwork shop. I do not know the exact profile that will be used yet, this is still pretty far from complete.

In your third pic down it looked like a built up crown.

Just remember that crown is a terminating moulding, it shouldn't be supporting a large piece above it.

It looks fine with a 3/4 to 1 inch board on top of it with a minimal reveal, but I've seen some really poor looking mantels because they ran the cap a couple inches out past the crown.

Re: Mantel Design

I've built many many mantels similar to your design and I have always preferred not to have the top follow the crown moulding line. Personal taste and customer preference usually rule my design decisions since there are a thousand of different variations you can play with. If using corbels though, it would look nice to have the top follow the crown.
