Low-Ball Bid Takes The Cake

I gave a home owner a price for doing some crown and base at a house that I was already working on and getting paid hourly by a GC. I told him that my price was half of what I could charge for the area. Long story short even my half price quote was low-balled. Here's the outcome:

Look at this nice tight joint, only a 1/4" gap. A real beauty huh?

at first look, I thought that was an inside mitre cut. So are the homeowners pleased?

That kind of work is a disgrace. Now I wonder what the homeowner will do. If they ask you to repair it, then you should charge accordingly. The way I see it, you do not want to get a reputation for repairing other peoples shoddy work for nothing. Charge what you normally would plus extra for taking down part or all that is unsatisfactory. What does the General Contractor say about this? Was he in any way responsible for allowing the low baller to work on his project. If I was a General Contractor, nobody works unless they go through me.

Re: Low-Ball Bid Takes The Cake

This one was nothing. You should have seen where he tried to cope his crown into the cherry crown I installed on the cabinets. I could have done a better job coping with a sawzall. He then filled it in with caulk. The gap was bigger then the one I already showed you.
GC has nothing to do with the crown. It wasn't in his contract and wanted nothing to do with it.

At least he nailed the trim on and did not use drywall screws.

Re: Low-Ball Bid Takes The Cake

that is not fixable. the piece on the left is too short... well why bother- just rip it down and start again. I am wondering if the HO was away during this install - surely he'd have put a stop to this?

seems to be a theme- you get what you pay for

Re: Low-Ball Bid Takes The Cake

I know of a cheap HO fix. It will save time and money. The HO can go into the bathroom, unroll the 2 ply toilet paper. He can then use the 1 ply to stuff the gap and save the other ply for his #2 business.
Just kidding, the moulding need to be done over !!!
Remember guys who install moulding like in the picture will always keep me and other qualified tradespeople busy cleaning up their disasters. Call it job security!!!
