Kraftmaid Cabinets
Picked these up at home depot over the weekend. I know they are not the best cabinets, but it's only going in my house. Got a quick question regarding upper cabinet molding. I have 8' high ceilings and got the Large starter molding that looks like an L to close off the upper part of the cabinet one end is 3" the other is 6". Does this L molding go up first before the cabinets? and screw the small 3" return to the ceiling then the upper cabinets to flush to the bottom of the starter molding? or does this piece go on the outside of the cabinets facing. Thanks.

Re: Kraftmaid Cabinets
Not sure exactly what your piece looks like, but usually there is either a piece that can go up first against the ceiling and the cabinet can pushed up against that. Or, you can leave a space for the piece if it's a L shape and use a couple of brads from inside the cabinet and nail up into that piece. If you have a crown molding, you can apply it over that. I hope this makes sense.

Re: Kraftmaid Cabinets
Yeah it's a L shape about 1/2 thick one end being 3 and other 6".
So this piece goes up first? the 3" piece gets screwed the the ceiling with the return facing wall side. And the drop is 6" and the wall cabinets can be pushed up against it? yes I also have a 3" crown that will cover half of this starter molding to the ceiling. I was just playing around and drew an outline of how my wall cabinets will look on the ceiling, tomorrow when I get around to it, I can cut the starter molding and screw it to the ceiling. BTW should there be another molding piece that covers the butt joint from the starter molding to the top of the cabinets frame? After reading your post, I guess I have a couple of ways I can install it. What do you recommend? Like I said earlier I already drew an outline on the ceiling of the layout. and Hate to use nails through the top of the inside cabinet. Last edited by y0manda; 05-15-2008 at 12:44 AM. |

Re: Kraftmaid Cabinets
I always install the cabinets first. Then I install the crown backer and then the crown molding.

Re: Kraftmaid Cabinets
Is it crown or cove moulding?
Kinda difficult to determine without a pic or a better description... I did install some Kraftmaid wall/base cab's last year and the crown moulding was a pita and took more time to cut because of this detail. Is this what you're refurring to here? Needed 15 post before I can post url cad photo better late than never. Go to Kraftmaid Specs site for info, not Kraftmaid cabinetry site. You will need to register for the information. |

Re: Kraftmaid Cabinets
Thanks! maybe you should swing by and show me how it's done
the only problem nailing the backer through the inside top cabinet after the cabinets are up, is that the cabinets have about a 1.5" void on top, but I could lay the 3" return part of the backer on the cabinet and have the 6" end go up to the ceiling and then toe nail the backer to the top of the cabinet's face frame with a pin nailer. |

Re: Kraftmaid Cabinets
A 23ga pin nailer should make it a little easier to install along with some backer's.
I had a heck of a time installing some of the crown moulding my Kraftmaid rep insisted that would be so much better than just plain ogee detailed moulding,it did look alright, but never again will I under estimate some rep's opinion (yeah right)! Good Luck with the installation. On my way to the 15 post requirement now

Re: Kraftmaid Cabinets
Thanks for the advice, going to install this tomorrow, with the wall cabinets first, then i'll do the trim work. I just wasn't sure if there was a 'set standard' way of doing it. i'll tow nail some 2x4's as backers then install the starter molding.
Good luck with the posts

Re: Kraftmaid CabinetsQuote:
On most Kraftmaid cabinets the crown backer is designed to be held out flush with the cab. doors, not flush with the box. What are the 2x4's for? |
