Kitchen Cabinets

Going to remodel my kitchen and I'm not a kitchen guy. Looking for moderate priced cabinets for a townhouse. What brands do you recommend?

Thanks

Don

Re: Kitchen Cabinets

You might want to think about knock downs - ones you assemble and hang yourself. I have heard real good things about Connestoga from a couple of very knowledgeable people - but I have never used them myself.

You might have a Builders Surplus or something like it by you. http://www.builderssurplus.net/We have gotten cabinets from this place before. They have some fairly decent stuff and a lot are in stock too.

Re: Kitchen Cabinets

Only cabinets I use are solid wood. Young Pine in NH makes a full line of very reasonably priced unfinished cabinets in pine - no plywood, no particleboard - with four options for door face, and will customize any cabinet for a small additional charge. Small company, very responsive, sold through many building supply stores.

I tried to include the web link, but this forum won't allow it until I've made 10 posts. That makes a lot of sense!

Re: Kitchen Cabinets

I would use the off the shelf in stock cabinets from Lowes or Home Depot as a bench mark. Check them out and see what you are getting for the money then compare to others.

I do many kitchens and I would also recommend Merillat. Most bang for the buck and quite a selection. Stay away from u put together cabs....very labor intensive and they have no rigidity when assembled. Call Merillat and they will send HO a thick brochure of thier line. Lead time is fairly quick...2 weeks in my area.

I'm not a huge fan, but there not bad, Keep in mind you get what you pay for. All that said, I have used them and the HO was very pleased. I have also used Legacy when cost was an issue.

That is pretty sketchy information. I would not recommend Merrilats to anyone myself. A Consetoga knockdown will take a kitchen installer 2 days tops to assemble and hang unless it's going into a Mc Mansion. There is no comparison in quality.

If you do a search on the web regarding "installing kitchens for Home Depot", you will see post after post from installers who quit installing for them within weeks or months because not a single kitchen arrived with all the right cabinets, fillers, toe kicks, scribe molding etc etc and most arrived damaged.

If you have never hung kitchens before, you would be well advised to pay a knowledgeable trim carpenter who has at least hung lots of kitchens (if not built them himself) to look at the components the salesman says you need, before you order a kitchen - REGARDLESS of whom you order it from.

Secondly, your sink base should be plywood - not mdf, not melamine.

Thirdly, you should specify that you will not accept any shipment if a single part is "Backordered".

Fortunately, I have not had to install a single kitchen in many years that I have not built myself, but the above would be my recommendations based on how things used to be. Good luckl.

jimc

Re: Kitchen Cabinets

Key word is 'moderately' priced cabinets. If the thread had been the top of the line we would be talking custom. Yes you do get what you pay for.
