Interior rail installation

Does anyone know of a good site for information on rail installation. I am mostly looking for info on newel post heights on floor rail, etc.. This will be my second installation and I just want to feel a little more confident. I will be doing a couple sets of floor rail and a couple of stair runs.

LJ SMITH is the best I've ever used. The product is great and the web site is very helpful. Until you get confident, stick with post to post and square top balusters. Over the post railing and drill-in balusters can challenge even the best trim carpenter, good luck!

This might be good for a start. Menards has them, I think Borders does too.

A good investment. You might also be surprised what a Google search can turn up.
Good luck

check your local codes for rail height and balluster spacing, web sites and books can tell you a lot but if you don't install to local code, then you will be re-building the rails.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out

I knew a guy who put the newel post on the first step but measured 32-34" off the FLOOR when he cut it. I mean installed it. Newel hanger bolt into the tread and the hand rail and everything.... then asked the homeowner what he thought... It really funny, cause the homeowner had short-man's syndrome.

Go here

stairways.org/codes_standards

to view and download the visual guide (pdf). Tremendous help in understanding the codes. Of course, you need to check your local codes to make sure there aren't any discrepancies, but for the most part, all code requirements are covered here.
