Installing Exterior Door
Hey guys. I have a side job to do tomorrow and not sure what to charge. I am installing one double door exterior unit, inlcuding taking out the old one plus installing new Trim around it. Also another single exterior door unit. Any ideas on what to charge?

Re: Installing Exterior Door
For a side project like this why not just figure out what you would like to get for the project. If the person who you are doing the project for is happy with the amount you choose than its all good isn't it? If you are not sure where to start for charges, maybe the hourly rate method would be the best fit for you. You already know what you make at your current job, make sure your rate is equal or higher than it.
One other thing to consider is that someone who has their own business will more than likely charge more than the person who doesn't. There are business expenses that come into play for those of us who have our own business. The side job labor vs business overhead and profit is generally not a fair comparison for actual charges of doing a job. Good luck |

Re: Installing Exterior Door
Jdm,
You say you're doing this tomorrow, the people already have the materials there for you and must feel comfortable having you do it without knowing what you are going to charge them so do the job then flip them a bill for 2500.00. On a more serious note with all due respect to you I can't believe the amount of these questions that are on these posts, seems like either you don't know your value or not sure of how long it should take you. Please don't take this the wrong way. Good Luck ! Joe |

Re: Installing Exterior Door
I'm a trim carpenter for new construction. I rarely do small side jobs let alone install exterior doors. Does anybody have a decent round about estimate? What would you do it for? Thanks for the input!

Re: Installing Exterior Door
First check for license req's. Here, they're pretty stringent on who can work on exteriors.
How old is the house? Stick or block? Why? Newer doors have heavier frames and need a larger RO. There is a chance that the new door is not going to be a 'drop-in'.

Re: Installing Exterior Door
How did your door go in? I saw this thread but have been so preoccupied I didn't get a chance to respond earlier. I have probably installed about 1000 entry doors in the last 10 years and double doors are always a drag.
