Installing Dentil Moulding Vs. Regular Crown
Hi all,
I've installed my share of corwn moulding, but have just been asked to install dentil. Is the process the same--coping ,etc.?? Anything I'll have to look out for? Richie-C |

Re: Installing Dentil Moulding Vs. Regular Crown
I don't know what 'regular' crown is but the big trick in dentil moulding is keeping the spacing correct. You need to determine the 'feature' wall and start there, end in the least conspicuous place like in a corner over a door (who ever looks there?).
The other way is to do it is figure out the perimeter and make adjustments all of the way around. Often this works out no better than the other way.

Richie-C[/QUOTE hey, richie Yeah, just keep the spacing equal especailly around corners. you normally cant tell, but it looks better, and worst case scenerio, you loose a couple inches of material.

Re: Installing Dentil Moulding Vs. Regular Crown
one more question...since spacing is a concern, and I assume you should try and get "full dentils" on corners, etc, can you cope the corners??, and can you use scarf joints, or do you need to use butt joints and 45 the coners?

Re: Installing Dentil Moulding Vs. Regular Crown
I usually butt joint mine and make the cut right at the edge of the molding that is proud. Either way, you loose the amount of the saw kerf in width. I usually use a dozuki or dovetail saw.
Good luck! |

Re: Installing Dentil Moulding Vs. Regular Crown
I think it depends on the type of dentil you are working with. if you are using dentil that has just spacing, and nothing on top or bottom, it is one of the most forgiving peices of trim you can work with. just but everything. cut right next to the dentil, and but them together. if a corner comes up where you get dentil in the corner, just butt the matching corners together.
