Inset Doors And Drawers On Bath Vanity?

I am getting ready to build a bath vanity for a customer which will have inset doors on each side with a bank of inset drawers (3) in the center. The doors and drawers will be shaker style. How would you guys do the drawer slides? I was thinking to make the drawer box with 1/2" clearance on each side and use side mount slides. Then fit the drawer front to the opening. Is there a better way or a different way of mounting the slides?

Rocky

Sounds like you are using epoxy or ball bearing slides. If you put the drawers in place then you can put the drawer faces on starting from the bottom. Get some shims and shim the drawer faces so they have equal margins. Then take out the top two drawers. Put the bottom shim for the bottom drawer in, center it side to side and then screw it in from the inside of the drawer. Put the next shim on top of the newliy installed drawer front, insert the middle drawer and screw that front in, do the top drawer the same.

Adding to what leo said, if you're putting pulls on the drawers, predrill the pull holes & tack the fronts to the boxes with temp screws through the pull screw holes while the shims are still in place.

I'm to scared to put hardware holes in any doors or drawers without the client there to see where the placement is. And this is after the cabinets are installed. I have seen them change their minds, not a pretty site.

Install the drawers first and then prebore the backs of the drawer fronts for drawer centering mechanisms. Side mount slides will work fine. You could always upgrade to undermounts but I don't know what is in your budget.

What Leo said.

If you change your mind, you better get your check book back out.

The size of the drawer box depends on the slides you are going to use.

Re: Inset Doors And Drawers On Bath Vanity?

Thanks guys for all the input! However, my question is specifically how to hang the drawer boxes so the inset drawer fronts will fit properly. I plan on attaching the drawer fronts after the drawer boxes are hung to get the proper fit. What type of slides will work the best?

You're going to need the adjustable drawer front mechanisms as I mentioned in my first post. Trying to adjust the slides to have a nice reveal is like squeezing toothpaste into a salt shaker. Use what slides you want and after the drawers are installed you just use the self centering pins to mark exactly where you want the fronts. It's foolproof and very easy. Try Woodworkers Supply. http://woodworker.com/drawer-front-a...r&searchmode=2

Need is a pretty strong word. A couple of screws with slightly oversized holes should give you enough adjustment to do the job correctly. If you are capable of making a cabinet you should be capable of centering the drawer fronts within it.

I would use blum or hettich undermount slides. I haven't tried accuride's undermounts yet. After you figure out what slides you are going to use check the bottom and top clearances for the slides. Then size the drawer boxes for the opening. If you have horizontal face frames between the drawers than it is easy. If the drawer fronts stack on top on each other (better use of space) then do a drawing or whatever so you know your dimensions. Then install the slides and boxes. I usually start from the top down using sticks cut to length to position the height of the slides. After the boxes and slides are installed fit your faces and reveal. If I don't do a drawing of all the measurements I end up screwing things up quick. And it gets pricey to screw up dovetailed drawers.

Any of you guys use double sided foam sticky squares for mounting drawer fronts? I drill oversized holes in the box, put the sticky squares on the front of the box and then stick the drawer front. You can adjust the front easily and it sticks enough where you can actually slide the drawer out to attach the front without the front moving once it's set. Really easy.

The Blum undermounts are good for insets since they are adjustable.

Up and down and in and out, but no side to side on the Blum's.

This is exactly what I do. You're right - very easy and works. Use a washer head screw to cover the over size hole.

Do you leave the tape on and have a gap between the drawer front and drawer? If I use double sided tape I use it for alignment purposes only, then I remove it and rescrew the drawer front in.

Re: Inset Doors And Drawers On Bath Vanity?

As far as the mounting of the fronts to the box goes, I use drawer front adjuster screws. They are essentially washer head screws but sold by the name of of drawer front adjuster screws. With 5/8" thick drawer boxes we use 1 1/8" screws. They also sell 1 1/4" that are handy to have around.

After all your drawers are on the slides drill your 5/16" holes in the drawer boxes being careful to place them in he appropriate spot if you have 5 piece fronts.

Like Leo mentioned earlier, start by taking out the top drawers and start with the bottom drawer. Shim the front in the opening the way you want. Then I usually use a clamp and reach over the mid rail and clamp the box and the front together trying to place a little weight in the drawer with my free hand at the same time.

Reach in from the top and carefully place the screw in the center of the hole. With a pattern of 4 holes I only install 2 screws at first. Then remove the shims and clamp, check for alignment, adjust as needed. Then tag the remaining 2 screws.

If something went wrong and you don't have the adjustment needed with the first two screws then you can back out those and try the process over with the empty holes.

My partner, Wayne, goes a different route. He places the front upside down on a bench and measures the reveals from the bottom and sides. Then screws the box on. He has success doing it this way. So that works too.

For 1/2" overlay, I built a fixture to place the front in upside down and it has a fence that the box registers against. Then screw the box on. Similar to Wayne's method. That is real fast and accurate.

I'll try to get some photos of all those methods sometime soon.

Should have added - I use small pieces of double sided carpet tape. I just leave them in place as the tape is very thin.
