Ideas For Transitions From One Type Of Crown To Another

So my customer's kitchen cabinets have crown and go to the ceiling and he wants to add crown throughout the rest of the kitchen, living room, dining room, and hallway. It's a nice sized crown job but he doesnt want to use the pickled oak crown on his cabinets and throughout those rooms and and he doesnt want to rip it off and put white crown on top of the cabinets (understandable).

I have seen some transition boxes before and hated the look of them so i drew up this idea:

Does any one have any other ideas or ways to maybe improve this one.

Bring the crown mold in under the top cap on the corner box add a trim alike the top cap to act as a closer Between boxes set revels the same Doing this will icon or bold the corner box and it will be viewed as a hightlight and not a part of the crown molding if possable place a band at the bottom just under the crown this will give added detail.

If you can get the same profile, the transition from one finish to another is not a bad look at all.
I don't think it is I should say.

I don't know what kind of profiles you are using, but what would it look like if you coped one piece into the other?

We would always run the same profile like Gus showed. It's the best solution IMO. If it's not possible, I'd probably return the crown back to the wall a bit before the cab crown before I did a plinth type block. I think the block would draw your eye and be more noticeable.

I wouls say that you are doing it the hard way, having a larger crown on the ceiling than on the cabinetry. My first thought was to cope the ceiling molding into the other but this will be pretty unsightly having a large crown run into your cabinetry. You will have to compromise the look of the transition unless you rethink the size of the crown moldings.

Well, as the saying goes, you can polish a turd for a real long time but when you're all done you still just have a real shiny turd.

Since you can't get what you need, I'd do as Dubz suggested and just return the large crown to the wall before you reach the kitchen crown, which simply dies into that same wall. Cut a return on a stick of crown and hold it up there for the owner to decide where to end it.

I would select a crown with the same spring angle if I were you though.

Good luck.
Jim

Here is a pic of a mockup Tom posted here of a minimal corner block, and another pic of the return option someone else posted (there is also the scribe option--but I don't have a good pic of that).

How would it look if you had some sort of decorative column or post running full length from floor or counter to ceiling? I've seen that done where it looks good.

I looked and chatted with others on this question all say get a bigger corner box with no top cap or drop the crown below the top cap of the corner box and add a flat closer strip to the ceiling to close the gap. Route the leading edge of closer strip to match with a ogy of some kind for detail to match crown. I found this video.

Tom made that mock up, but I thought it was a good idea for some situations.

It would be interesting to see it in painted crown into stained crown, with the two sides of the block in different colors.
