Ideas For A Former Framer On Building A Shoe Rack
My wife wants a basic shoe rack shelf along the length of her side of the closet so she can place shoes under and on so I am looking for some basic design ideas. I was thinking a 1x8 at a 22.5 angle with a 1x2 a couple of inches in from front edge for the heel to sit behind and a 1x2 to support under where the two or three pieces meet. I think for support I would put a 1x2 cleat along the back wall then a 1x2 going down to the floor every four feet and maybe a little triangle piece on each side of each of these support pieces to keep them from moving if they get kicked. Should I add a 1x2 with a bevel ripped on it to support the front and stop and bowing? How does this sound? Any advice or design improvements? Thanks.

Sounds like a good basic plan, glan you did not try to incorporate a couple of 2x12's into the design
, GMOD. PS, dont put it together with 10;s

Re: Ideas For A Former Framer On Building A Shoe Rack
See must have small feet if you plan on a 1x8.
If it was me, I would a do put in some closet maid wire racks, since you get better circulation. Sure easier than cutting angles anchoring and the sanding, sealing and painting. If you have the time and the ability, wood is good and your labor is free. When I traveled in strange places and got my shoes wet, I got in the habit of putting my shoes on their side (dry faster and better). I put them on the dresser to keep out the critters. If she wears them infrequently, (like my wife with 80 pairs of must have bargains), the drying is not important.

Instead of 1x you could use these shoe rails to hold back the tidal wave of footwear.

Re: Ideas For A Former Framer On Building A Shoe RackI have managed to keep my wife below 80 pairs because I throw any excess away and she never notices since she has too many and cannot remember each pair She is a great shopper and gets new shoes for $2 a pair, the the real problem is finding a place for them. She has room for 80 pair and when there are some that don't fit the racks. Periodically, I cull out the ones I don't like and she thanks me for organizing without know what I did. I take them to the Goodwill and get a good tax deduction. - You do what you have to.

Re: Ideas For A Former Framer On Building A Shoe Rack
Lol, those are some good comments. So it sounds like my design is confirmed to be adequate. I am going to build it from wood to pay respect to the old journeyman carpenters who trained me. Agreed she will only want more stuff built but that is ok since I never do the flowers or other romantic crap that I probably should. She does have small feet but should I do the 1x10 to be consistant with construction standards and the next owner or tenant when I eventually rent this place out?
