I Replace Most Of Trim On My House Today Because Of Rot!

I help my dad today replace most of the outside trim today! I think I did a fair job, this is my first carpentry project since I finish college.

Curious about the 1X2.
Is that a common detail down there?
Seems like it would lower the gutter
and close it up a bit.

Well done CJ. Hope your future is bright. Nuttin like practicing on dad's house, huh? Ever consider installing gutter apron (called EE edge round here) to help shed the water past the newly installed fascia? It would greatly extend the life of what you've just done.

I bet pops is happy.

If you pre-prime the material it will look better and last longer.

Yes. It transitions water from the shingles' edge either into the gutter or past the fascia board.

Thats a reason for early failure. Go ahead and take shortcuts, I make a living it seems like fixing others shortcuts. Its best practice to seal all 6 sides espically on pine.

Looks good. Few things to keep in mind next time. Prime the back of fascia and soffit. Use eaves flashing. Just because it didn't have soffit vents before doesn't mean you couldn't add them in and vent the roof while you're at it. You could always do that later if you had spare time. Make sure you caulk every last joint. Not bad at all. Got the carpentry part looking good.

Prime before you caulk, and you may want to slip in some drip edge...
