I Can't Cope
OK...... I'm an old school guy I guess because I still use a coping saw. I've had several guys through the years tell me I'm crazy and that I should use a jig saw to cope but I just can't seem to bring myself to it. SO.... I thought I'd come here to see what the prevailing wind is out there on this subject. Sell me on the jig saw coping thing...... I'm a stickler for detail and I just can't see being able to get the level of precision out of a jig saw that you can get with a coping saw.

Re: I Can't Cope
Tell you how screwed up I am, I like to cut copes by hand.
Feels good.... when fewer and fewer things do.

Re: I Can't Cope
You can cope with a jigsaw? I didn't think you could be accurate enough on decoratinve moldings.

Re: I Can't Cope
to each his own , i say. i cope with chainsaws, 16 in. makita's , sawzalls and jigsaws. it is all in the quality of your finish product . that being said , some of the newer "steerable" jigsaws w/ a narrow blade can be just as precise as a coping saw .

Re: I Can't Cope
"I can't cope"
I know the feeling. I have trouble coping myself sometimes, like when I walked through a just framed house and found 10' walls that were more than one inch out of plumb ![]() .Sorry, just could not pass up that opportunity . But I cope strictly with a jig saw, and can't understand when I hear guys say that it is not accurate enough. Like anything, with some practice, you will get it down pat, and wonder why you ever did it any other way.

Re: I Can't Cope
Using a coping saw is as easy and basic as it gets, - - I've never seen a need for an improvement on it . . .

Ever try coping lindberger? if you got a dull cheese blade it burns and stinks.oh and another thing, how many guys you know put the blade in backward and try to push the saw through the work? I have met builders with 12 years experience who don't know a coping saw is to be pulled through the work. Last edited by A W Smith; 11-01-2007 at 11:11 PM. |

Re: I Can't Cope
I'll always mitre. It's the way that was taught and the way that I've always done it. It also keeps your math skills high, anything for fewer graycells

Re: I Can't Cope
O.K. I already know I'm going to catch flack for this, BUT I have used a rotozip. Yes I know the hazards (Haven't learned any the hard way "yet") - They want to dig into the wood, could slip and catch your finger, etc... But I coped a 3 1/2" oak base in about 8 seconds with a little filing to finish off. Yeah , there is a little learning curve to get touch. Haven't done it alot but will probably do again. Had a pretty good trim guy helping me one day and he saw me pull it out and his eyes got HUGE, even when I was done his eyes were still HUGE and he didn't know what to think. He tried it but later I saw him with coping saw, he chewed up to many pieces (or afraid to cut off his finger). I'm not really here recommending it for safety reasons obviously.

Re: I Can't Cope
Makes me a heretic I know but some things I won't give up, just for the feel of it. Some of you guys, I wonder why you don't just give your wife the vibrator, and roll over.
