How Would You Price Out Of Town Jobs
Just curious how some of you price out of town jobs. I currently work as a finishing carpenter sub-contracting for a builder here in town and get paid by piece work. I have done a fair number of "side jobs" and I usually use the same price list and just bump up the prices about 10 per cent but I have never done a job that would require a 2-3 day layover.
When giving a quote would you have the travelling costs (mileage, motel, per diem ...) as separate entries or factor them into the prices for the work to be done? Any help would be great. Thanks. |

Re: How Would You Price Out Of Town Jobs
I've done a bit of out of town work and I hated it.
As for pricing, I figured long days, pay the guys overtime, work 12+hours per day. Pay for 3 meals, motel, transportation and travel time. Put this all in the bid. Make sure your guys think it's worth it. Living out of a suitcase is no fun. You friends aren't around. The overtime doesn't cost anything because it's made up by less motel and meals. No point in breaking out the costs unless the customer asks. |

Re: How Would You Price Out Of Town Jobs
Depending on schedule and what's going on (I'm specialized in ICF, which is not as popular in CA as the East) I charge a fee for travel to cover flight/milage I then figure $ 100/night per room (one for myself, than 2 guys per room) for hotel and $ 30 per day for meals for each of the guys

Re: How Would You Price Out Of Town Jobs
The price is based on two words "want" and "need". If a client "wants" me to travel to their summer home then the price is higher then if I am slow and I "need" the work.
I use to go to Cape Cod one a month to work on summer homes and visit my family. Since my family moved I will not travel there unless I can live in the summer home while I am doing the work. Years ago I traveled to Florida with a friend to build a couple large decks. The client saw value in having us travel from new england. Be careful with the potential for call backs. More than once I have installed doors with primed jambs and trim and the client forgets to paint.........primer failure and the wood looks bad.....I get the call and travel for free.
