How Do You Do Baseboard?

I have seen guys measure one wall at a time, cut an install. Or measure a room and write the numbers on the wall or floor.
I start at one spot and measure every wall and write the numbers on a legal pad. All I write are numbers. I do not note inside/outside corners, 45 or returns.
Anybody else do this? Or am I just weird?
Don't answer that.

It's according to circumstances, but if it's a hike to the saw, yes, I take all measurements, along with a diagram of the room layout if it's chopped up and cut each room as a package. In some cases, I'll set up a long cut table for the big stuff and set up a quickstand in the room for closet base or short cuts. As far as casings go, I like to set a chopsaw up in the room to minimize walk time.

Re: How Do You Do Baseboard?

I use a legal pad, measure room by room using symbols for the type of cut (90/45/22.5) and the dimension for each.
I'm not smart enough to keep all of the cuts straight otherwise.
I'll be interested in hearing other methods...

I take all measurements & write them on a notepad. Noting copes, long points, short points returns ect. I make all my cuts at once & # them so my wife can put them in place. Makes short work of trimming out a room.

Saw in the room, measure cut install---measure cut install---etc...

Saw 3 blocks away, clipboard draw room, all dimensions, all details, bring the whole room in, install, usually hike back for a miscut or two. Now concrete base is a whole nother story, GMOD

Re: How Do You Do Baseboard?

I pretty much do it the same as lone and gene. For me my saw is almost never in the house, let alone the same room!

I did do some new construction a few months ago, I got spoiled having the saw right with me!

Oh yeah. New construction is where I like to be. Nothing is quite the same as having your tools set up in the greatroom of a beachfront property, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in the dead of winter. Truly inspirational. Summertime ain't bad either.

Re: How Do You Do Baseboard?

I also take all numbers down on a notepad noting ml (miter left) cr (cope right) rel (return end left) etc. Might not make sense to anybody but me but that is the way I have been doing it for 20 years.

Don't answer that.
I would meassure out the entire room, I draw a horizontal line for each piece and on each end of the lines write IC for inside corner, OC for outside corner, E for butt end, R for return, note the miter angle at the ends of each line.

Go cut it all, bring it back in and trial fit. Install what is perfect, make notes on the ends that need to be recut, take all the recuts outside, repeat until it's done.

IC --------------58 1/8-------------- OC

Re: How Do You Do Baseboard?

I measure whole house after doors are installed,
write ments down on legal pad with symbols for cuts ( L-S, S-L, C-S,etc...) always working left to right.
go to saw, cut , number and stack rooms together.
If I'm getting to far ahead of my installer I will scatter pieces in rooms for him ( all he has to do is come behind me and nail)

same with crown, windows, etc...
we always measure crown, and windows first, than while I'm cutting crown and windows the installer is hanging doors.
than move on to base...

its a well oiled machine.

I've seen guys cutting 1 piece at a time but dont understand why

Saw to room, measure and write on wall, copy angles, cut all, install all.

I like to make 2 trips around a room.

Warner uses his Festool Measurex for measuring and then his Copex saw for cutting copes.

Heck, in the winter I just pray for a dry warm place to cut!

That winter view of the ocean would be sweet though, I have always wanted to see the ocean in the winter for some reason

Re: How Do You Do Baseboard?

One guy installing doors
One guy on windows
One guy rough cutting base: from longest to shortest, No waste. Usually by the time I have all the doors installed he has every piece of base in the house rough cut and is now installing.
We too install left to right
We have two chops saw on the job, but mostly only use one. I have everything timed so we almost never have to wait to use the saw.
I like my guys to hold the trim in place and scribe the back. Then use a quick description: SP, LP, “I”inside, “O”outside
We Cope all inside corners, holding up base up 3/8” for carpet

Re: How Do You Do Baseboard?

I keep a sticky pad on my tape and write down about five measurements at a time. Measuring and cutting one board at a time, to me is slow.

Man, ain't that the truth. I got 4 days worth of work waiting for a warm up. We got about 8" of snow on the ground & the only place I got to cut is in the yard.

I was doing that over the Pacific today. Didn't see much of the ocean though, I had to work...
