Hauling Tools In A Trailer
I know many of you drag a trailer to your job site(s) everyday... The first of the year I purchased a 6 x 12 (dual axel) trailer and I am curious about the "bouncing around effect" it is going to have on my tools, most of all my mitre saw. Have any of you had any problems?
The main reason I ask is I just purchased the Festool Kapex and right now it rides shotgun with it's seatbelt and air bag on (I think you understand why)

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
I have a 14' Wells Cargo with rubber torsion axles and you can put a glass of water in there and drive around on bumpy roads and it won't spill a drop. It is a tandem axle though, I think the singles would tend to bounce a little more. By the way, I'm looking to sell it because I have found it easier to pack everything in the truck neatly and for most small jobs I don't need that much space.

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
I have no issues with hauling any tools in my trailer, I stand up my miter saw and table saw and hook them to the wall with a bungee.
If you got a trailer with torsion axles, they ride like an old caddy. I think I might turn the air bag off for the Kapex, it might be under the reccomended weight! |

Torsion axles for sure. Not spring axles.

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
dragging the trailer to and from the jobsite every day would seem to defeat the purpose of using a trailer. If you intend to drag your tools home with you each day, maybe you should consider a van.

My trailer is almost permantley attached to my truck. If it is a ways to go each day (like an hour) I will find a spot to keep it and pay a neighbor or something to keep an eye on it. I like having everything at hand all of the time, except my trailer needs to be bigger now, I have outgrown the 14 footer. |

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
I moved out of the truck boxes and into an enclosed trailer a couple months ago. It goes were I go. I bought the trailer so I could lock up all the tools at night and not have to haul them around but can't bear the thought of leaving them. If you ever get cleaned out, you will understand the pain of having to replace everything in one whack. Stop and think about how much $ you have invested in your tools and think about going to the store and dropping that kind of change in one trip just so you could get back to work and you will understand.

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
You raise a good point about losing all the tools. I am purchasing a 6x12 next week to become more portable as the jobs have become smaller and staying on site until done is priority.
I think I will take pictures of everything (like you do for your home owner's insurance) cause I couldn't even list everything I own. Wouldn't miss it until I needed it. |

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
I actually talked to my insurance rep yesterday about insuring the contents of my trailer. It is $2.75/$100 value and only covers repacement value! Which means if you have a 5 yr old circ saw, they are only going to give you the money to cover another 5yr old saw once you prove that you actually owned it and paid the $100 deductable. BS!!! Take the extra time to secure your tools somewhere that is safe.

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
I have a rider for any tool over 500 bucks, full reimbursment minus small deductable.
I think it is an inland marina rider policy. I almost never leave the trailer anywhere I cant see it. |

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
I and considering buying a trailer becuase I'm tired of working out of job boxes, but the advantages of a trailer to me is the ability to leave it at the job site, so that you don't have to continuously haul tools back and forth. If you haul your trailer home each day, then I would think that you would be better off with a van instead of a trailer. But that's just me.

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
Vans are a pain, just imho. Get an inland marine policy, mine is a $500 deductable, declaired value replacement. I show reciept they give me all but $500 of the loss. Oh, get a ramp door, and wheeled tools!

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
That is the only mistake I made on buying mine. I bought a barn door style used and am already looking for a ramp door. 12" sliding compound mounted on a wheeled Ridgid MS-UV weights about 150lbs. Wish I could roll that thing in there.

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
Have any of you found ways to secure your tools down to the trailer?
Im talking like your expensive tools like the SCMS or Table saw, some way to bolt it down or lock it in somehow to make sure if someone gets in somehow that they will have a hell of a time getting it out. |

Re: Hauling Tools In A Trailer
If they get in, I want them to steal it not destroy it trying to get it out. If it is too complicated to get out, chances are that you will never secure it.
