Hanging Heavy Artwork Off Crown Moulding

I just looked at this job today where the clients want crown moulding throughout the house. One of the guys is an artist and wants to hang heavy canvas paintings off the proposed moulding. He described these clips that insert between the top seam of the trim and the ceiling. And off of these clips one can hang there objects. I've never seen or heard of this. I'm definatelly putting a lineal 2x nailer behind all the moulding.

Anybody done this before and know any pointers?

I've done something similar in retail stores for signage and stuff. The "clips" that they sent us are just little "L" brackets. Screw em to a joist or backing (or possibly use zip-togglers) so the tab part comes down right in front of where the crown will nest against the celing and the screws and meat of the bracket are hidden by the crown. Then install the crown just like normal. The weight isn't actually hanging off the crown, but the ceiling.

I'm not so sure that those paintings are as heavy as you think they are, anyhow. I've got a few around the house, and they're light as a feather. It's the frames people add later that make artwork heavy.

Abe, it's called picture molding and is made specifically for that purpose. It's not a crown, but is installed flat against the wall with the 1/2 rounded portion on top, which is where the picture mold clip is hung from...you can hang a significant amount of weight from these moldings..

Does this "picture molding" resemble the look of Crown?

Re: Hanging Heavy Artwork Off Crown Moulding

Homeowners get confused all of the time, and dont know the names or the differences between the stuff. I am sure picture rail is what they are looking for. It kinda looks like crown, but, it is obviously not the same. I guess it looks like crown hanging half way up a wall.
